Trip Report - Switzerland in Sept./Couple trip - Part 2

Day 8 - Train to Montreaux, Chateau de Chillon. We loved this beautiful place! We loved the history! We loved the beauty of Lake Geneva! We had packed our picnic and had lunch on the grounds afterward. Then we walked the lake path back to the train station. We considered the boat but weather was very iffy, with sprinkles off and that day. We grabbed take-away and ate back at our airbnb and prepared to leave the next morning.

Day 9 - train to Geneva. Check in to airbnb, leave luggage. It was a rainy day and we didn't have any agenda for Geneva as we had only came to Switzerland to hike and don't really enjoy cities. But we road the bus to the Confederation Center to eat at the food court. We had a great lunch, walked around a bit, saw the lake and the huge fountain, went to the local Coop for dinner snacks and then headed back to our airbnb to prepare for our early return flight the next morning.

We couldn't do everything but we are so happy with our decisions. The trip experiences fit us and our interests. We probably would've enjoyed the Callier chocolate tour and Guyere cheese tour, but time just didn't allow. We are happy with our budget-saving choices as well. We followed Rick's advice to picnic often. We bought groceries at whatever Co-op we were near to cover two of our daily meals. We only ate out once per day. It was easy and enjoyable. Filling our water bottles up at the local fountains was healthy and budget-friendly! We never needed actual CHF and I wish we hadn't gotten any. We were able to use our credit card everywhere we went. I'm glad that I had been preparing for the trip by adding the treadmill on an incline for the past month to my regular exercise routine. Even then, the hills were very strenuous and I was thankful for every bench I came to :) We only take a backpack each when we travel, and I never needed more than my extra sweater, which I tied around my waist when I became hot. I wish I had taken a pair of shorts with me. We had great experiences with the kindness and helpfulness of the Swiss people. Overall, we had an amazing time and we are so thankful for the opportunity to go!

Thanks for this wonderful trip report! I loved reading about your experience, could picture in my mind's eye the locations that I know and learned of a few new ones I can explore in the future. So glad that you liked Chillon and that you extended your experience there by picnicking on the castle grounds.

Overall it sounds like you were true to yourselves, you saw and did the things that interested you while saving a few for next time ;-)

A perfect holiday!

I agree about the money. We took a CHF50 note we had left over from a previous trip when we went to Switzerland for a week in June. I still have it. I'll see if we need it next week but I expect to bring it back home with me.

Lovely trip report, thanks for sharing. I’m curious if you would share how much the trip cost in total. And break it down in broad categories: flights, rooms, food, travel pass, etc. Thanks!

No place like it….so glad you had such fun……do the Callier’s chocolate tour and Guyere next time….will never forget standing in that room at the chocolate factory and eating the candy to my heart’s content…..a forever memory.

The co-op grocery stores and small shops do make a nice picnic for the hiking. I like stopping into the local grocery stores when we travel to see what locals enjoy by proportion of the store shelf space, too. I remember lots of wonderful jams in Switzerland.

Glad you had a wonderful time! Thanks for sharing!

Brenda,
I enjoyed reading your trip report, thanks for sharing!

So my understanding is that one doesn’t need any local currency? Even for small purchases such as ice cream/gelato, or a pastry?

Priscilla,
I'm sure more experienced travelers can better answer this question. All I can say is that we had no need. In Murren, we saw one eating establishment with a sign that said, "cash only." We didn't get ice cream/gelato or stop at small bakeries so I can't speak to that. With so many experienced travelers on these forums who are willing to answer our questions I believe you'll hear from those kind folks real soon :)

Even though credit cards are widely accepted, I always think it prudent to have some cash. A minimum of 50ch should be enough.

I always take some cash with me because I love eating gelato, or a tasty pastry, when I travel.
I just haven’t traveled to Switzerland yet, but when I do, I’m sure I’ll be eating some chocolate, and gelato or ice cream! Ha,ha,ha!
