Here is part one of my very long (sorry!) trip report.
Monday 23rd September and Tuesday 24th September
We flew out of Melbourne on a Monday evening in late September for our 40th Anniversary trip to Switzerland. This was our first time trying Emirates Premium Economy, which was very nice. Not as good as Business Class obviously, but still very comfortable and it was nice to have couple seats the whole way.
Before getting to Switzerland, we planned to fly into Milan, then have a driver to Varenna to spend our first four nights relaxing on the lake where we celebrated our 30th Anniversary. Unfortunately, due to Italian airport strikes we ended up having to change our flight to Zurich instead, then catch two trains to Como S. Giovanni, where our driver picked us up for another 90-minute journey. It was a very, very long journey from Melbourne.
We checked into our hotel, the wonderful Hotel du Lac, where we had reserved a room with its own terrace overlooking Lake Como.
Wednesday 25th September
Our first full day in Varenna was lovely and sunny, but the forecast for the next day was for rain. We had booked a self-drive boat for the next day, but the boat company called and suggested we change it due to weather. The morning was spent wandering the pretty town and visiting Villa Monastero and its spectacular gardens.
Lunch was a shared pizza by the lake, then we got our boat. With a three hour hire we got to go over towards Menaggio, and then down to Villa Carlotta and Villa de Balbianello. You were not allowed to moor the boat and get off unfortunately, but we had visited these villas before, so it was fine. We crossed back over the lake and sailed passed beautiful Bellagio, where we had stayed on our last trip, before returning to Varenna, where were we allowed to dock, for a bathroom break for me.
Once back on board, we sailed northwards to Bellano, before the rain started and we returned home.
Dinner that evening was at Veranda dei Pescatori, a restaurant high on a hill above the lake. Luckily the weather had cleared again, and they picked us up in a tuk tuk for the trip up. The views and setting were gorgeous, and we had an amuse bouche of Polpette with toasts and fish cream, with complementary prosecco to start. We then shared a starter of mixed marinated lake fish, followed by two shared main courses, Lake Perch on a Canarolli Risotto with Butter and Sage and Fish Ravioli in a Butter and Sage Sauce.
Thursday 26th September
Today was quite wet and with heavy clouds, obscuring the wonderful lake view. We wandered a very wet Varenna shopping for a belt that my husband had forgotten to pack. The beauty of the poor weather was that the usual day-trippers were absent, making the village so much less crowded and consequently more enjoyable. We had a panini for lunch under cover in a lakeside café and then spent the rest of the day resting in our room.
I needed to organise a transfer to Tirano for Saturday. Originally, we were planning on catching the regional train to Tirano, but this time there were trackworks meaning that the train was being replaced by a bus for over an hour of the journey. Since we would have all of our luggage, this didn’t thrill us, so we called the company where we had our other driver and organised a transfer with them.
Dinner this evening was at Osteria Quattro Pass. We made a reservation the day before, it seems most restaurants needed a reservation even this late in the season. We ate an amuse bouche of a creamy cheese with a Limoncello Spritz, followed by steak and potato gratin for my myself and venison for my husband.
