Traveling to Rome off cruise ship

Any suggestions on how best to see Rome from cruise ship? Don't know whether to try to do it on our own or take a shore excursion through cruise line.

How many in your group? If you can get 6-8 people together, you can hire a private driver which is way cheaper than paying for a cruise ship shore excursion. I suggest you find the roll call for your particular cruise ship/date and see if you can find like-minded cruisers to organize a group.

Easy. Somewhere in Italy buy a Regionale Train ticket to and from Rome Termini because the line to buy a ticket in Civit.. will be long and slow. Get off the ship, take the shuttle to the port entrance, walk the quarter mile or so to the train station (you can see if from the port entrance), catch the first R train to Rome (about 3 an hour), get off at St. Peters (near the Vatican) and slowly walk across Rome to Termini visit various sites along the way. At Termini catch the train back to Civit... Allow an hour and half at both ends for transportation to and from Rome and adjust your time in Rome accordingly.

Hi Dottie, The owner of this website, Rick Steves has written a book available to give you the very information that you are seeking. It is a Mediterranean Cruise Port book that offers alternate suggestions (do it on our own) for visiting the cities that you are asking about. It would be worth your while to order it here on line or visit a large book store in your area. I see that there is a Travel Festival coming up in November for Europe through the Back Door/Rick Steves in Edmonds, WA and during this time there will be a sale on onsite and on line I believe.
