Train travel in Paris and Milan to Varenna with a rail pass

We just returned from a three week trip through France, Germany and Italy. We had a rail pass for our transportation between cities/countries. Two points that we learned on this trip: First, the trip between CDG airport in Paris and Gare Nord is NOT included as a freebie with your rail pass. It was discontinued in February of this year we were told. The ride from CDG to St. Michel (one stop beyond Gare Nord) was 9.5 euros. The ride on the local train from Milan to Varenna on Lake Como WAS included on the rail pass. We were told this by an agent at the Milan train station. As a matter of fact, we rode that train both ways and we never saw anyone checking for tickets or rail passes.
