If you board a train in the Cinque Terre, make sure you pay the five euros for your ticket. We saw a couple on the train last week; a ticket agent demanded their tickets, which they did not have; instead of paying five euros each, they paid €55 each.

An expensive lesson. Agents don’t check very many passengers, but when they do, it can be very costly.
Those paper tickets also need to be validated before boarding. Just having one isn't enough; the agents have to be able to see the time stamp so they know it hasn't been re-used.
