TR Walking The Thames to Parliament Square

This will be my last full day in London before leaving the next day.

This day would be a dry day but with storm like winds. It was the second named storm and the winds were something to reckon with..

I wanted to take my friend on a boat trip along the Thames for our last day. I thought that it would be a nice way to spend our last day. I also looked forward to the boat trip myself.

We walked from PI Victoria along Vauxhall to the Thames. It turned out to be very difficult walking due to the winds, They were ferocious. And it was a long walk.

We reached the Thames and I began to look for where we might be able to get a boat for the excursions that go along the Thames. And there were none. I realized that probably there were not going to be boat trips because of the winds. There were Uber Boats but no other.

We began to walk along the Thames towards the London Eye. At one point, the wind began to push me from behind. I was unable to stop running, walking or whatever. I was trying to stop but the wind was so powerful that I was unable to. I thought that i was going to be pushed over and managed to make it to a grassy area where I could get control. And finally I was able to stop.

We kept walking and eventually reached Parliament Square.

I do not know when the winds finally stopped but they did and it was a nice day. It was cool, maybe cold, but it was dry and there was even some sun. This was sometime in the afternoon.

I can remember that we were around Victoria Street because we would take a bus back to Victoria Station.

I posted a nice picture of Big Ben and a friend noted that she was glad to see some sun.

I am glad that the weather was pretty the afternoon of my last full day in London.

I have pictures. I am not certain what all I saw and now I have to do some research. We passed an impressive monument with a plaque reading "The Burghers of Calais" and at the top of the pictures, it says Victoria Tower Gardens. Have to find out more

Sometimes I do not realize how much I saw or what all I saw until I come home and look at my pictures. I do a lot of research after coming home.

too bad if the Uber boats were running that you missed the chance... They are actually Thames Clippers with Uber advertising. I find them excellent, they make a huge effort each time they turn around to completely wash the boat down and wash the outsides of the windows to remove any salt spray. Warm but not too warm inside, comfy seats. I prefer to be inside than in the somewhat noisier and exposed outside seating.

Might have been an interesting ride in the big blow.

Thank you Nigel

Darn! Sorry I missed a valuable opportunity but I thought the Uber Boats were for mostly transportation and maybe pricey when compared to the tourist boats on the Thames.

I had done a lot of research.

You certainly got unlucky with the weather, the UK in general and London in particular has been very benign this year, the ground is still very hard and reservoirs low. But, we had two storms in 6 days which seemed to overlap entirely with your trip.

I hope it didn't put you off returning too much. At least London has plenty to do indoors.

This could be a whole other topic on this Forum. I've been looking through my latest trip's photos wondering what some photos are of and why I took it. Then I look it up and wonder why I didn't pay closer attention while I was there and wish I could go back.

I used to work in the area and know it very well so if you want any help identifying anywhere just ask.
My guess is you walked down Vauxhall Bridge Road towards the river. It is long and definitely a bit of a slog. Vauxhall itself is on the other side of the bridge. (‘Interesting’ fact the Russian for train station ‘Vokzal’ comes from the area).

The Burghers of Calais is a Rodin sculpture. I have always found it very moving.

Oh Emma, I love Rodin. Had. no idea what I was looking at but I am going to be doing research about The Burghers of Calais.

And yes, you are right about some of our "stroll". The walk was ok but the weather was not.

Allan from Calgary

You and I have a lot in common. But we must be grateful for photography. What we we all do without pictures?

I just discovered that the The Burghers of Calais was created by Rodin who I dearly love. Wish I could have spent more time looking at the monument

I was told by my friend and others that the UK had a glorious summer. It seems that the week before I came was nice enough weather wise and perhaps the week after.

But I was most unlucky with the weather. Most of the week that i was there, the weather was brutal.

We did the best that we could

I am missing London

But now it is time to focus on my cruise from Reykjavik to Southampton next September. I am going to have a lot of questions.
