To The West: Amsterdam, April

Longtime RS Independent travelers, now slowed by age and bad knee, tried a combination. 9 days River Cruise, 7 days based in Amsterdam. Worked well for us, despite frigid temperatures. Rho Hotel (found on RS Website)few steps from Dam Square. Good hot & cold b'fast buffet, rooms quiet, location fabulous, where N-S & E-W Trams cross. Bought 4 day transportation pass for 21 Euro each, hopped on and off trams, metro & buses. Bought Museumkaart (49 euros @$1.30). Saved a lot of money, entered all but Anne Frank without line. Especially recommend Dutch Resistance (couple with Anne frank), Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam History, Franz Hals in Haarlem, Steamtrain, Boat and Zuiderzee Open Air. A dozen others, all good. Best restaurant experiences: Rick's Cafe De Reiger across canal and up a block from Anne Frank: Food fabulous, prices moderate, friendly reception. A local told us about van Speyk-Duck Breast & Rack of lamb to die for, 50 Euros with dessert& & wine. Skeptical about cruise but loved it and will try this combination in another country. Schipol is now our favorite airport. George, Pittsburgh

Hi George, Enjoyed your report. Question: Who did you cruise with and how large was the boat? We are interested in a smaller type boat cruise at some point in the future. We love Amsterdam and also find Schipol easy to navigate. Thanks for any more specific info on the cruise! Happy Travels!

Hi George great report. We head to Amsterdam and Belgium in Sept. Wondering if you had any trouble getting from the airport to the central station? Also, did you need to use cash all over or were credit cards accepted? Thanks!
