The Kennet & Avon Canal during November 2011 & August 2012

We cruised for a total of four weeks on the Kennet & Avon canal aboard the finest canal boats we have ever encountered. The hire boat company is Moonraker boats in Honeystreet. In November of 2011 we spent two weeks cruising from Honeystreet to Bath and return. One of the most memorable events was watching the illuminated parade in Wells. The floats were spectacular and the parade lasted two hours. It is an amazing annual event. The locks at Devizes are called the Caen Hill locks. Most tourists only observe them from a distance.. to operate them yourself is a true adventure. No one on our crew was younger than 60, and the exercise was a delight. During our late August and early September cruise in 2012 we again cruised down the Kennet & Avon to Bath where the hire boat company brought us our rental car so we could do day trips from our mooring in Bath. The rain that had happened during the previous week had left the River Avon too high to comfortably cruise, so we moored in the canal on the east end of Bath. This cruise was our 18th on the UK canal system... it is the best way to tour, especially off season when the rates are the lowest and the canals are less traveled.
