We were extremely fortunate to have been guided by Teo Ivanciuc through Maramures County, Romania, in August 2017. Having lived there his entire life, and being from a local family that goes back many generations , he knows the area so well and has a deep appreciation for the history of the various groups of people who have lived and worked in the villages. Our focus was on tracing the remnants of our Jewish ancestors in the town of Viseu de Sus. With an elder relative's handrawn-by-memory map that I sent him in advance, including old Yiddish street names from the early 1900's, Teo did some advance legwork--and was able to take us to the site where Jewish businesses and the synagogue once thrived, to the cemetery, to my great-grandmother's house which is still standing---and even to the little stream where our mother and grandmother washed their clothes! Teofil also took us to see Eli Wiesel's home/museum in Sighet and to the Jewish cemetery there. It was a very emotional and meaningful journey. Thanks to having seen the video of Teo guiding Rick Steves through Maramures, we knew he was the one to hire---and he didn't disappoint!!
