We drove a total of 1000 miles in nine days after leaving Athens. The drive was one of the highlights of the trip. Greek roads are the best I have ever driven on.

I highly recommend all of the AirBnbs and hotels where we stayed.

Athens is much cleaner and quieter that when I was there 40 years ago. Pedestrianized streets make walking to all the main historic/archeological sights very manageable. The Metro is faster and more predictable than several other countries in Europe. The Metz neighborhood was so pleasant and quiet at all hours. We felt like locals. We easily walked to all of the sites listed above.

Meteora is mesmerizing. I highly recommend taking a tour with Visitmeteora to get historical information and context for the visually stunning monasteries. If you have an extra hour, Theopetra cave is worthwhile. It is small and easy to see quickly.

Delphi is a very interesting archeological site and the town is well worth spending some time in.

Mystras was my favorite single archeological site. The number and quality of the Byzantine ruins is remarkable. The natural beauty and views are breathtaking. It is well worth the trip. Be prepared for a long vertical climb and get there early enough to get back to the exit before closing time.

If you like olives and olive oil or are interested in their cultural significance, I recommend a tour of Ben Olive Mill. The interactive tour provided a wealth of historical, scientific and culinary information about olives. The setting is appealing and the 4th generation mill owner gives the tour.

Nafplio is a magical place, especially at night when the cruise and bus tours leave. It has a relaxed elegance and vibrance in a small, historic setting. The narrow alleys and staircases are filled with all manner of shops and restaurants. Beautiful churches can be discovered around many corners and are worth a peak. It is easy to relax and wander the streets and then stop for a coffee beside the water. Fresh seafood is plentiful around the port as are the bars.

Mycenae and Tiryns challenged my comprehension of ancient architecture. The stones used in the fortifications are so large that their placement by Cyclops makes as much sense as their placement by humans prior to the invention of pulleys. How the perfectly shaped stones fit so perfectly together and still stand without the use of mortar is baffling. These must be seen to be believed.

Our final night was spent at the Avra hotel in Rafina. The hotel had very modern amenities and the room looked directly onto the port. The shuttle to/from the airport was timely and took the stress out of making our return flight.
