South France - Looking for a village

We want to spend a week in the South of France before boarding a ship in Rome. Any ideas for a village to stay with British friends and about the drive to Rome?

You might want to delete this and repost under France in the Q&A section.

And unless you’re willing to pay a large drop-off charge for renting a car in France and dropping in Italy, consider flying from Nice or Marseille to Rome.

It would be easier flying to Rome than driving. I like the picturesque area around Rocamadour/ Domme and you could fly to Rome from Bordeaux airport.

I also like the area around Puechabon as a good base to explore the area.

Jennifer: where is there to stay in Puechabon?

The place I stayed in Puechabon has been sold by the owners but there are several gites available in the area through Booking.com or Airbnb. We spent the week exploring the wine region, seeing some of the coastline and walking. There are hundreds of villages that you could choose, particularly if you don’t want to be right on the coast.

Consider the Luberon region of Provence. We stayed in the small village of Lourmarin which is flat (visit the grave of Albert Camus if you are a literary fan) so makes for easy strolling. Day trips to the many nearby towns and villages, markets, sights. An easy drive to Marsielle to return your car and fly to Rome.
