Part 2
Drove from Rinka Waterfall to Lake Bled. Funny story, don’t follow car GPS unless you have nerves of steel for roads in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and additional country car insurance.
Lake Bled stayed at Apartments Agenija. Good, clean, great location above Lake Bled. Parking garage for car. And the breakfeast Crate every morning filled with local delicious food! Still dreaming about it.
Activities- drove to Vintgar Gorge. Get there EARLY! Arrived 8 am and had only a few other people. Just gorgeous. Smooth hike through gorge and then up small mountain and around cow pastures. Very photogenic gorge and views of surrounding countryside.
Bled Castle-Ok, not extremely historic. Lots of tourists. My teenagers said the “Escape from Castle” themed game was too confusing and dumb (their words). Nice views.
Rowed to Bled Island. Fun rowing and beautiful church. Rang bell, walked around island, rowed back.
Drove to Kaminska Bistrica and took the cable car up to Velika Planina. Note that the chairlift after the cable car is out, its being rebuilt. Option one is to walk an hour on the road to the village. Option 2 is to hike up and over the small hills which we did. Great views and swings on the chair lift stands. You’re up close and personal with the cows. Teenagers and cow selfies. No touching the cows please. Splurge and have lunch up there at the shepherds’ huts. Excellent jota. Cash only.
Bled Restaurants- Old Cellar Bled- possibly the best meal of our entire trip. Yes, that good. Restaurant Central, good.
Drove over Vrisc Pass, on a Saturday. Don’t do it on a Saturday in the summer. Hordes of people on a barely two lane road with hairpins turns and two-lane traffic, campers, motorcycles, tourist pulling off to overcrowded small parking lots, walkers, and bicyclists (really people?), all trying to get to (and over) a 5,000+ ft summit that is Way too Overcrowded with said hordes. We stopped only briefly. Nice views though.
On to Kobarid. Rented apartment Kobrika in town. Nice, clean and with parking for one car. Small town feel.
Activities- WWI museum, very informative, nice layout. Hike to Kozjak from town, easy walk. Very touristy. Dip your feet in the Soca river at the end. Very nice. Hike up to church and WWI Walk of Peace memorial. Look up and down the valley and meditate on its history.
Whitewater rafting on the Soca River near Bovec. One of my favorite activities! World Class guides and scenary. Shout out to the excellent guides of SportMix.
Restaurants- Hisa Polonka excellent meal and great craft beer. Koltar, good fish dinner.
Drive to Skocjan Cave. Great guided hike inside cave. Outside cave take longest hike back to parking lot. That was awesome too. Lots of nooks and crannies in the gorge to oggle.
Piran. Ah lovely Piran. Park car in garage for a few days and splurge to stay in town. We rented an apartment from PachaMama. Fifth floor, Lots of stairs, bathroom outside apartment proper, but totally worth it. Town is almost 100% tourists but fun.
Activites- Walked town walls, swam at rocky beach underneath church.
Rented bikes at Luma Sports and went to Secovlje Salina Nature Park.
Restaurants- Tartini Square unremarkable restaurant, Pri Mari good, and Pirat- excellent baked octopus for two. Most restaurants had the exact same menu items. Coffee to go can be had cheaply near the town bus stop at Modra Kava - partially run by people with intellectual disabilities.
