San Francisco & Sonoma

Just our usual holiday trip to see family in Northern California, but a couple of bits to share for fellow travelers.

First, the Manet & Morisot show at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco is absolutely excellent. For some reason I assumed she learned from him. This exhibition suggests that he learned from her … but she seems to have been beyond him. They were quite influential on one another. Show continues to March 1, 2026. https://www.famsf.org/exhibitions/manet-morisot

Second, never a surprise, but dining in the California wine country continues to be a treat. We had three great dinners in a row at Poppy in Glen Ellen, Cafe la Haye in Sonoma and La Salette in Sonoma.

Jack London State Park, the Charles Schultz Museum in Santa Rosa, galleries in Sonoma and Healdsburg and wineries in the Russian River and Dry Creek valleys rounded out our visit and then we drove through the Redwoods and along the far north California coast back home to the Northwest.

Manet & Morisot show at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco

Glad to hear you enjoyed this exhibit; I'm looking forward to it next weekend! Sounds like I will learn a bit myself.

It is titled, "‘Manetsplaining’: author describes impressionist’s ‘agonising’ act of condescension."

Ha! The title of the Guardian article cited above nails it! Having seen the outstanding Manet & Morisot exhibition in Nov, I quite agree. Yes, Manet was a man of his times. I prefer Morisot’s style to Manet’s, but pairing them together is what makes this exhibition especially compelling.

For those who are curious to know more about this show, there's an interesting article on the museum website, "5 Things to Know about the Friendship of Manet and Morisot"

https://www.famsf.org/stories/5-things-to-know-friendship-manet-morisot?utm_source=famsfmktg&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=manetmorisot&utm_content=20251016&mc_cid=22568f6f43

There's also an excellent video on the museum's website (same link that Fred included above):
"More Than a Muse: How Morisot Redefined Manet’s Art" https://www.famsf.org/exhibitions/manet-morisot

The video is only 12 min, and it might make a good stand-in if you can’t make it to the actual show (or even if you can).
The audio guide that accompanies this show is also worthwhile.
