San Diego June 14 to 21

Spent a super fun week in San Diego with my 79 yo mother and 34 yo autistic son. 5 star trip.

Leaving Seattle:

  • We had a 10:00 am direct flight on Delta SEA-SAN.

  • Mom & I packed light - small carryon only. Rocky (my son) did not get the memo. We pulled up to his apartment and he came out with an ENORMOUS PURPLE suitcase. We both busted up laughing and headed to the airport.

  • Easy to check the bag at the kiosk ($35.) and we went through the left side of check point 3. We did not have to take off our shoes or remove electronics or the 311 bag. Woohoo! This time I was not selected for the random search (double woohoo!) Got to the gate with lots of time to find....delayed. Twice. Gate change.

  • On the bright side we were on around 11:30. But then taxied and waited and taxied and waited. Hmmm. Took off at 12:40 instead of 10:00. GOOD THING! There was a full ground stop at 1:00 so we dodged a bullet.

  • Smooth flight to San Diego - 737-800, we were in row 21, seats DEF. Got in and by the time we got to baggage claim, Rocky's ENORMOUS PURPLE suitcase was there and off we go to the rental car shuttle.

  • Ermagherd! The gates with the razor wire entering the rental car area. Rocky: "Are we going to rent a car or a prison?" Luckily, it was the former and we drove away in our Kia with 44,000 miles.

  • GPS got us to our hotel in less than 20 minutes. Hooray.

  • We stayed at the Best Western Yacht Harbor Hotel. I had some thoughts after reading the reviews but my reasoning was this:
    1) AirBNB contributes to a housing shortage
    2) Free parking at BWYH
    3) No "resort fee" (and rightly so)
    4) Free breakfast (and it was a good one). So, if you have an autistic family member, you will understand. When Rocky was young, he was told that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. He believes that he MUST BE STUFFED before he starts his day. If there is not a healthy breakfast, he will stuff himself with absolute crap (not literally) junk food. Also my mom is a big breakfast eater too so.....to save myself heartbreak and money, I picked a hotel with a free breakfast and it was golden!

  • Hotel notes: room 509 - loved ALMOST everything about it. Location - check. Housekeeping - spot on. Beds - comfy. Fridge & microwave - yeppers. Wifi- good. Multiple outlets for all our devices - sweetness. Plenty of hot water & good water pressure in the shower - roger that! So what was the brown? The bathroom sink smelled like a sewer every time you washed your hands or brushed your teeth (GAG!) No p-trap??? But did we ask to move? Heck no, cuz everything else was good and I had read some iffy reviews and was afraid to get a different room. The view was awesome and we never closed the drapes - when I got up to pee at 300 am it was so cool to see the lights in the harbor reflecting off the water. Note: It was a little noisy, but we stay in city centers, so it wasn't bad for us.

Also, Ralphs was super close for bottled water, beer, wine, and snacks.

Dinner was across the street at Jimmy's Famous American Tavern. Yummy Cowboy Burger. Mom loved her salad. Being able to walk there and enjoy the sunshine in the outdoor seating - chef's kiss!

Next up, Father's day, without the father (the younger two spent the day with him at home)

Sunday, June 15 Father's Day

  • We got to the San Diego Zoo prior to opening and scored a parking spot in the first row. Took the tram tour, then walked the perimeter, then the Sky-fari both ways. Bomb! Love that place - haven't been since Jan 2000. After it started getting really crowded, we bailed.

  • Lunch at The Balboa - a dive bar. I have to say I love my mom - after traveling to Portugal and Mexico, graffiti doesn't freak her out (but then she also thought the graffiti was of rockets, LOL) The centennial burger was amazing, the fries were good, and the drinks were cold.

  • Museum of Us at Balboa Park - the toe-tag map display made me cry, the descriptions of colonialism made me feel righteous (??) anger, and the Beerology made me happy - I'm a simple woman.

  • Ended the day with the Gaslamp walking ghost tour. Our ghost-host was great, but she needed more to work with. We did totally enjoy it though.

  • I turned off my fitness tracking app a few months ago over privacy concerns (haha, I know - what privacy nowadays?) but we walked a butt-ton of steps.

Crashed hard - good day!

Monday, June 16

  • So, when Rocky was younger, he had a terrible time blocking out stimuli so he missed out on a lot of trips. But now as an adult, he is branching out and experiencing a lot with support (last summer he and I tent-camped for a week at Yellowstone.)

  • So today, it was Legoland. Is it a little unusual for three adults to go to a (YOUNG) kiddo amusement park? Maybe. But, here we are at opening. We only went on two rides, but he had to check out everything he missed when we went when he was 8. It was sweet, sad, heartwarming, and heartbreaking all at once. It felt poignant (?). Especially since Legoland has a bunch of creative play areas that are not rides and the areas have a sensory guide specifically for neurodivergent people. LOVE LOVE LOVE that.

  • Because it was the Monday after Father's Day, it was super uncrowded and in some areas it felt like we had the place to ourselves.

  • It was fun and healing.

  • Dinner was at Point Loma Seafood. I may have misread the directions and we may have walked past it by 1.25 miles. On the bright side, we were ready to eat when we backtracked to it. Oops!

  • OMG!! I got the small appetite fish and chips, mom got the soft-shell crab sandwich, Rocky got the shrimp tacos (and I got smoked tuna to snack on later). Ate outside looking over the harbor sipping some wine. BEST FISH ever!!! I lived in SoCal from 72 to 92 and ate a lot of seafood.

  • Bummer when mom tripped over a curb and got a few scrapes. But she is tough and I admire her so much! She just dusted herself off and asked if I had the neosporin in the room (yes I did - I have a mini-pharmacy for emergencies!)

  • Amazing day! Walked a ton of steps and slept good!

Tuesday, June 17. Best of San Diego e-bike tour.

  • arrived at 9:45, got our helmets and bikes and a little orientation. My husband and I rented e-bikes on Maui and loved them so much that we got two. Yuma (where we have a winter place) and Sandpoint (summertime) are both super bike-friendly and e-bikes are amazing (especially if your husband has a knee replacement and you want to stay active and outdoors.)

  • our guide was Zac and we had the bestest tour! Gaslamp district to Petco Park to the USS Midway to Little Italy to Balboa Park and more. Definitely a 5* fun day. Mom did fall (sigh) but she is so tough - she dusted herself off and carried on. This is the same woman who biked down Haleakala at sunrise in 2012 when she was 66. My idol!

  • After the tour, we wandered around and then had an early dinner at Taco Centro. I had the Mahi-Mahi quesadilla (YUGE!), mom had shrimp tacos, and Rocky had carne asado nachos. AMAZING!

  • After we came back to the hotel, it was so beautiful, mom and I went on a walk around the waterfront and stopped at Eppig Brewing to have a drink while the sun set over the marina. Spectacular! Gorgeous and peaceful.

  • PS: I found 2 mysterious bruises and a scrape on the shin from the bike pedal, but still a 5 * day!

I have been to San Diego and loved the city. Would not mind going back another time.

Thank you for the report.

sciencegrrl, great report! Thanks for writing it! I loved the stories about your son; especially the enormous purple suitcase, lol!!! That just cracked me up!

My nephew is autistic and I've spent time with him when my sibs and their families all get together for mini vacations and he is also centered around food. He loves to eat (and of course, is skinny as a rail). But he especially loves sweets, so when I brought back a chocolate-peanut butter pie I'd picked up at an Amish bakery in Pennsylvania, I became his best friend. :-)

As a former resident (twice) I'd say you really experienced that awesome city. Loved your descriptions of your day and the good and bad of the hotel. Smooth flights are always good and being late has become part of the experience. Positive to that is I don't mind as much that Amtrak is usually late and sometimes VERY much so.

  • Arrived at SeaWorld about a half hour before they opened (former Disney addict here). Excellent parking spot and then through bag check and waiting for the national anthem to finish as we walked with purpose to Manta. I had to use my teacher voice with a group of boys pushing their way through the line (really?). It was a fun ride.

  • We wandered the park, enjoyed exhibits, rode Emperor. It was fun too. I rode Electric Eel alone - Mom & Rocky weren't having any of it! It was terrifying and exhilarating and (thankfully) a short ride.

  • I know SeaWorld is controversial to many, but we really enjoyed the shows, the conservation message, people watching (including meltdowns). The waterfront was a cool place to chill for a while. Also, when you walk the perimeter, there are uncrowded places where you forget you are in an amusement park.

  • Dinner was at Smokin J's BBQ in the gaslamp area. We sampled a variety of stuff. Standouts: the brisket was delicious, the mac and cheese delightful, and the bread pudding was decadent! The owner (?) chatted with us for a while.

Again, lots of walking and we went to bed tired.

bostonphil7: I love that city! If we could afford it, we would buy a condo and live there part-time.

Mardee: that enormous purple suitcase was easy to find, that's for sure!

  • We went to Mission Beach/Belmont Park for the day. Had our ride wristbands and when it got a bit much, grabbed some relatively quiet time on the sand.

  • I love that area - a little seedy, yet we always felt safe. The carnival style rides are lots of fun. Rocky really loved the bumper cars and did them a few times. I got a great video and sent it to his dad and stepmom. The Giant Dipper rollercoaster was fun and we enjoyed the ropes course.

  • Shooting bad guys in the 4D game was a good time too - cheesy but fun.

  • Took some time out to have a snack and Sandbargarita at the Sandbar.

  • Dinner was at Pizza Nova, also walking distance from the hotel. Rocky chose it and it was fine, but my least favorite dinner. There are so many great restaurants around.

  • Slept like a log.

  • our final full day (sad face). We did the Hop-On Hop-Off Trolley tour and marvelled at what a great city San Diego is.

  • walked around downtown Coronado and had coffee and a snack. Then back on and over to Balboa Park.

  • Spent a lot of time at the Air and Space Museum - that is stunning! Enjoyed the Automotive museum. Rocky was disappointed that the Comic-Con museum was not included in our GoCity pass, but he did not want to spend his own money to go in.

  • We had a snack and beverage and contemplated the sculpture garden, then wandered around enjoying all the flora before hopping back on the trolley.

  • Dinner was at Point Loma Seafood again. This time we didn't walk past it. BEST food on paper plates with wine in plastic cups. It reminded Mom and I of eating at the Crab Cooker in Newport Beach in the late 70s. Nostalgia + happy taste buds + wine + scenery = maximum happiness.

  • Slept great again.

  • Mom and Rocky had their big breakfasts as everyday (BWYC really did a good job with this) and I had a light one.

  • We headed to the airport at 10:45 even though our flight was not til 2:00 because we are used to SeaTac and ALWAYS give ourselves plenty of time. The security line was super long but after about 20 minutes it started moving fast.

  • We found our gate and Rocky got some food and chilled with his noise-cancelling headphones while Mom and I found the winebar.

  • Our flight back was easy - we had our own row and we were not charged for our glass of wine on the flight. I'll take any win I can get!

  • Our luck held and the enormous purple suitcase was out so fast, it beat my starbucks order! Dave was able to swoop in and pick us up and off we went.

Final thoughts:

  • The Best Western cost me $1293 for a week for 3 adults. It was pricy, but worth it for the location (so easy to get everywhere) the breakfasts that we took full advantage of, and the great service of everyone who worked there. The sink was a bummer, but it wasn't enough to offset the good.

  • The GoCity unlimited passes costs us $1008, but I felt they were totally worth it. We didn't pay for any admissions and we got our money's worth with all the activities that were included. If it was just Mom, Dave & I we would have done even more, but we were careful not to overstimulate Rocky.

  • I originally had a rental car reserved for $380, but when I checked about a month ago, the price had dropped to $230. so I cancelled and re-booked. There is a bright side for people boycotting travel to the US. The reasons completely bum me out though. Again, GPS was MVP.

  • Rocky thought the food prices were high, but I thought they were reasonable for Southern California.

It was amazing trip to an amazing city and I'm so glad we did it. Can't wait for the next adventure!
