We're doing a 7 day road trip in April 2019 between Venice and Rome with our 10 yr old. Any recommendations on where to stop in between for 1 night? We have been to Florence already and am interested in seeing towns along the coast. Thanks.

Liguria- Santa Margherita Ligure or Camogli are waterfront.
. Bologna is wonderful. The Italian Lakes. Verona. A village in Tuscany or Umbria. So many special places to visit.

I would head east to Abruzzo, a wildly unvisited area. Check out Santo Stefano di Sassenaio and its famous Albergo Disfuso, a good stop for one-or-two nights, depending on what you might choose to do in the area. How about hiking to the castle from Lady Hawk? The Parco del Gran Sasso si quite magnificent.
Proceed to Ascoli Piceno (lunch) then over to the coast and north to Senigallia. Spend a night-or-two here exploring the coastal area of Le Marche.
Then head north to Ravenna, a charming town with amazing historical mosaics. From there, Venice is a 2+ hour drive, but you could side trip to Ferrara on the way.
