Ringstrasse Tram tour--Vienna

There are demonstrations in Vienna on Sundays, disrupting the tram service. We waited for over 1/2 hour and finally a tram official explained why the #2 tram kept disappearing from the electronic board.
She said this only happens on Sundays. Finally the tram arrived with lots of empty seats so we got on, stopping for gelato as Rick suggests at Schwedenplatz. Then we switched to tram 1 and got off at Kunsthistorisches museum.

I would like to clarify that demonstrations do not occur in Vienna on every Sunday and further clarify that these are peaceful marches. Seems you had a bit of bad luck as these normally happen just a few times a year to a level that would really disrupt things.

Next, there is actually an official Ring Tram Tour which is different from what you describe above. The Ring Tram Tour operates using yellow colored trams and a headset is offered to explain sights as you pass. The cost for this is 8 Euro and you cannot use a regular transport ticket.

Sounds like you did a Tram 1/Tram 2 combo which is doable, but without audio and at a better price. In my opinion, the best sights are clustered on the Tram 1 line anyway, so really no need to switch over to Tram 2.

Now, most importantly, regarding the ice cream. I am not sure where you went, but the best ice cream is not actually on Schwedenplatz, but up the road on Rotenturmstrasse at either Zanoni & Zanoni or at Eis Greissler. The long lines don't lie.
