Review of Rabbie’s five day northern England tour

We wanted to tour northern England in conjunction with a visit to friends in the area. Rick didn’t offer a tour of just what we wanted to see so we tried a Rabbie’s tour. It was the York, Dales, Lake District and Hadrian's Wall five day tour. Overall, the tour was good. The towns and specific sites chosen were all excellent. The 16 passenger van was able to get to sites that a coach could not. The driver / guide was very nice and explained a lot of the history and geology of each area. We let Rabbie’s choose our accommodations and both B&Bs were quite satisfactory with great hosts and delicious breakfasts.

That said, having been on a couple RS tours, it didn’t quite measure up. If it had been a RS tour, the guide would have been telling us about each site as we visited it. With Rabbie’s you need to do your research on the sites you will see (which isn’t a problem, you just need to be prepared). Another difference was that there were a couple of people on the van that were visibly ill - coughing the whole way. A RS guide would have asked them to wear masks. This didn’t happen on the Rabbie’s van and we ended up with colds by the end of the tour.

The tour was well organized. The folks at Rabbie’s gave great customer service when I emailed with questions. (I booked direct with Rabbie’s. Most of our tour mates seemed to have booked through a third party vendor.). Overall, I would say if Rick isn’t going where you want, they are worth a try. I admit, I am spoiled by the RS guides.

Thank you for the review. I have wondered about Rabbies - the short timeframe and sites are often interesting.

Re the coughing - I have spent the last three weeks and counting recovering from bronchitis that I picked up (presumably) on a day tour in Northern England (your areas) in April. Two couples hacking away, not covering their mouths. Incubation period corresponds. I've never been so sick with a virus (diagnosed by MD) - something nasty circulating up there. I heard coughing in many places - museums, etc, I visited. On the tour, I couldn't escape from it.

This experience has made me re-think taking tours - I rarely pick anything up on fully DIY European or Asian trips. I agree that, especially with all our Covid forced learning, everyone should be more considerate with their coughs and colds!!

If you are in a confined space such a tour van with people who are constantly coughing, there is always the option of putting on a mask yourself. I also bring along some good cough drops and kindly offer them to the other individual.

Thanks Carol - I was not prepared with a mask.... Live and learn - I regretted the oversight at the time! I like the cough drop idea.

At least one of the individuals was clearly quite ill - sat near the bus during all the stops instead of seeing the sites. I was worried as the day progressed. With good reason!

Kathy, thanks for the review of your Rabbies tour!
I was glad to see the good points here (below) and that you mostly enjoyed it.

No, they cannot compare to a Rick Steves tour, as you observed. The Rick Steves tours and guides are the best! Yes, their guide would have dealt with the sick people in some way. I am sorry you caught a cold while on your tour!! It's really tough to be sick while traveling! It's happened to us before, and it's a bummer. (Showing my age here)

The Rabbies tours are good for just what you used them for. You needed to go to some areas not covered by any RS tour. Rabbies provides good transportation to the spots in their tours, places that perhaps otherwise would be difficult to reach using trains and coaches/buses with a plan cobbled together yourself.

The tour was well organized. The folks at Rabbie’s gave great customer service when I emailed with questions. (I booked direct with Rabbie’s.)

Good to know. I have had good experiences with them.

Kathy, thanks for the report. I've been looking at Rabbies for a trip with my husband so he can enjoy the trip more and not have to drive.

Could you answer a some questions? When letting Rabbie's choose your accomodations, do they give you options such as hotel vs BnB, bed type,...? Were your accomodations in a good location to have an easy walk to dinner? Was your group a full van? Did you have any problems with stragglers, or was everyone considerate of their fellow travelers? Would you have felt comfortable speaking with the driver/guide regarding the coughers?

Thanks again
Jean

Thanks so much for writing up this review. I have been thinking about the Rick Steves best of England tour vs. doing it ourselves or combining travel by ourselves with short tours like you did with Rabbie’s. This is so helpful!

Hi Jean. We were given three choices of accommodations to rank in order of preference - B&B with ensuite (which we chose and were given), B&B with shared bathroom and hotel. Our B&Bs were both within walking distance of plenty of restaurants and attractions. I’m not positive, but I think the B&Bs may have been in more convenient locations than the hotels. In each town we had tour members in about four locations - three B&Bs and a hotel. The van can hold 16; we had 14 on our trip. As far as stragglers, our guide / driver was often not as specific as I would have liked him to be on return times, saying for instance “about 1/2 hour” rather than “be back at 2:30,” but we didn’t have anyone really abuse it. I would have felt comfortable talking to him about the coughers, but I could tell by his personality that he may not have been comfortable making an issue of it with the sick travelers and he was too nice to put in a position that would make him uncomfortable. Hope that makes sense :)
Carol, we always carry masks, but I think it would have been more effective to have the sick tour members masked and wished the rules were more like Rick’s. I think RS does a better job of outlining expectations in writing up front. But, of course, Rick’s tours are much different than Rabbie’s, which most likely gets lots of last minute reservations. It’s a different business model.

Thanks for your review! What towns did you wind up staying in?

I love that area of England!

I'm glad you had a good time (mostly) on the Rabbie's tour. We have a 3 day Isle of Skye tour booked with them in June & also chose the B&B with ensuite bath option. I'll be sure to bring some masks with us!

Did they let you know the name of your B&B ahead of time? We're about a month out & I haven't heard anything yet.

Pam, we stayed two nights in York and two in Keswick.
Tina, I just checked my old emails and we were sent a note about accommodations in November and again a reminder in April. You might want to check your spam or contact Rabbie’s. In the email they included payment options and totals. One of ours was cash only so I was happy I could be prepared. (Unlike RS, the tour payment amount does not include lodging. You pay that on your own.)

Hi Kathy:

I did email Rabbie's about 2 weeks ago regarding accommodation info, but was told to check back when about 4 weeks out from the trip. That's coming up this next week, so I'll try again. I, too, would like to know if I need cash or can pay by credit card & where it's located in relation to the restaurants I've booked for dinners. We were told by Rabbie's that for Portree, dinner reservations were a must or we would have difficulty finding a place to eat both nights. Thanks!

ORDTraveler: I will try to do a little trip report when we get back. :)
