Resistance & Deportation Museum in Lyon, France

This is a terrific museum which deserves more than the 1-triangle rating in the latest France guidebook! Full of interesting and at times poignant information and displays.

What a coincidence. Earlier today this museum was recommended to us by our niece when she learned we would be visiting Lyon soon. We are putting it at the top of our list. Any other Lyon recommendations?

We took advantage of the Lyon City Card, which I think is a real value. We enjoyed the river boat tour (about an hour) and the guided walking tour of Vieux Lyon (reservations needed, can make at the TI) - these activities and the R&D museum are covered by the City Card, along with public transportation (which includes the funiculaire up to the Cathedral). Free activities which we enjoyed included the Notre Dame cathedral (amazing sight and terrific view of Lyon) and the Atelier de la Salerie (silk printing shop) - incredibly interesting to talk with the artisans there.

If you have access to a holocaust center with a library, a public llbrary in a very large city, an academic library with a collection on Jewish history, or interlibrary loan, you might want to look for the book La Déportation published in 1968 by the Fédération Nationale des Déportés et Internés Résistants et Patriotes. Its Library of Congress catalogue number is D805.A2 L62 . Even though it's written entirely in French, it has hundreds of dramatic photographs and a comprehensive map of the camps. This may prepare you for the best appreciation of the museum. [This is a guess as I've not visited the museum myself].

hcota: Rick's chapter on Lyon in his France book is very good. Just pick out the things that interest you. I agree that the Resistance & Deportation Museum is very good. In fact, I always say it should be called the Resistance, Deportation, & Collaboration Museum, as it has exhibits about all three of these.

As a film buff, I enjoyed the Lumiere Museum; it may be less interesting for others. But beyond any specific sights, Lyon just has a very nice vibe. On a sunny afternoon, I enjoyed the Parc de la Tête d'Or, along with, it seemed, a good cross section of the Lyonnais.
