How important is it to have reservations for the Eiffel tower, do we need to get them before we leave the states or can we get theme there. We will be there the last week of August

You should get on line immediatly at www.tour-eiffel.fr and make a reservation if you can. It may already be sold out for the dates you want.

We were unable to get a reservation, so we showed up and stood in the line for the stairs up to the first level. It was a Saturday afternoon, which I would think is a very busy time, and we waited about 45 min. in line (while watching pickpocketers do their work!). Once on the first level, you can buy a ticket to take the elevator to the top. It worked well.

When we were there earlier this month, there was a problem with one of the elevators and things were moving slower, and reservations harder to come by.
