Portugal

I just wanted to thank Rick Steves and his book on Portugal. We wore it out. We traveled to Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve and the book was very helpful at every stop. We found several tips particularly helpful and saved us a significant amount of money. The first being the warning regarding appetizers or snacks that bars and restaurants are likely to place on your table. While they are free in most of Europe, Rick was correct, they were not in Portugal. The waiters were happy to take the snacks away, and this tip alone probably saved us over 50 euros over the 2 weeks. The second was the recommendation to try Uber. With very few exceptions, this was no more difficult than in the US, and likely saved us 200 euros over the life of the trip.

While there was only one line in the book, regarding Praia do Luz, we spent almost every day there and the beach, and found the village enchanting. We did go to Salema, and agree, that it is a very charming town, however it was too far from Lagos, to travel to every day.

Thanks again for everything. We are headed off to Croatia, Hvar and Brac next month. Have already ordered your book.

Croatia is a wonderful place, I was amazed that it is still a little under the radar.
Enjoy.

So nice to read your positive experience in Portugal. Always a plus to have those money saving tips along the way. Fond memories of Portugal. Enjoy your journey to Croatia. We found the RS Croatia Slovenia guidebook an excellent resource.

I would also vote for a stop in Korcula if possible. We spent 2 nights. It was our favorite island!

If there is any way you can check out Istria ( especially Rovinj) it was a highlight when we travelled to gorgeous Croatia and stunning Slovenia. Ljubljana in Slovenia mimics Paris with all the bridges and trees and culture..Lake Bled is fabulous too,,,
We saw many parts of Croatia on a combined bus (3 days) and one week boat tour with only 25 travellers...we followed Steves at each port and also on the week on our own...

You will love Croatia...

Thanks for all of the suggestions regarding Croatia. Have been back for several weeks now, and loved it. May be the most beautiful part of the world we have visited to date, and we have traveled a lot. The water was second to none, and the people the most friendly and gracious we have experienced. We did get to Korcula, and Rovinj, and yes they were both stunning. The island of Brac is a must see, especially the Rhat beach.
