Polar bears, aurora, and glaciers, oh my!

I debated posting about my recent trip here, but I since I had no idea about this great company before, I thought other Rick Steves type travelers might appreciate it. Plus I am a one finger typist so just the facts.

A friend and I signed up for this adventure through RoadScholar, but I saw no advantage other than that's how we found out about AC. The ship we were on is being retired, it was fine but a little dated. The ships next year look great.

I'm not a cruise or even ship type person, but that's really the only way to see what we saw in the Arctic, and it was wonderful. I loved the zodiac landings in remote areas where we were able to walk on the amazingly colorful tundra. We were alerted to an aurora display late one evening. Magical!

Although our ship didn't see lots of wildlife, we did see some bears, caribou, whales, and birds. There were wildlife experts, a geologist, and a number of Inuit people onboard. The cultural aspect of the trip was a highlight for me.

This is the trip we took, but there might be differences beyond the new ship from this year.

I have friends who have taken a similar tour to the Artic. Their pictures are amazing. After talking to them about their trip, 2 years ago, it sounded wonderful and what a trip that not many people can experience. But, being my husband and I always travel together, for us the price is a deterrent. Also, we are not really countryside travellers, we love cities.

We have not done a cruise, but did go to Greenland this summer on our own. Loved it!!! We were in Ilulissat as well as Disko Island. When we were on Disko Island, one day a Canadian cruise line arrived just for the day. It was amazing to see so many people descend on a town of 800 people. We really want to go to the east side of the country next time to the smaller villages and see the polar bears over there.
