Please take Hotel del Corso off your recommendations list

You were lucky. Here is what happened to us:
We had arranged for 4 nights in Hotel del Corso in Sorrento, Italy, through Expedia as we booked it 3 weeks due to our arrival. It is a family run hotel. The hotel demanded payment for the 4 nights as soon as we arrived. They billed our American Express account 500 euros. They then told us that they did not have a room for us because of problems with the computer and would have to put us up in a first floor room for the night.
My wife was sick with fever and chills. She is 73 years old and in frail health. Two days ago in Rome a doctor prescribed antibiotics and they were starting to help her. Subsequently they tried to billet us in their first floor unit which was cold, damp and moldy. It was a converted unit that had been an apartment with no ventilation and scant light. It was more like a dungeon then a 3 star room. We refused the room. And were ready to pull out when they offered us a room on the second floor. Because of my wife's health we accepted it but complained because space did not allow us to open up our second suitcase. Del Corso is a 3 star hotel and the room was not of that quality. I asked at the front desk for some hot tea for my wife. It arrived 40 minutes later and the water was only warm. That night she had chills and asked for heat for the room. This was the 26th of September and they told us that they do not turn on the heat until the 1st of October. In the morning at breakfast we asked for hot tea and the father said there is tea in the pot. I told him again about my wife's condition. He reluctantly went and brought back only one Lipton tea bag when there was an assortment of British breakfast teas available. We explained our situation to them and that we would have to move to another hotel. One of the brothers told us that we were never satisfied. He said that they would refund us. So I asked for a credit receipt they told us that they do the credit at the end of the month. We insisted but they would not give in figuring that we would get it corrected with American Express. We then moved to the Hotel Antiche MuraI on the morning of the 27th. this was a fantastic 4 star hotel for 20% more It wa 3 times as much better. It was outstanding. This was another of Steves hotels that he recommended. We spent 3 and 1/2 weeks in Italy and with this exception we were treated very well. Three weeks later, no refund. We have always stayed in 3 or 4 star hotels when we travel. Never have we experience the mistreatment that we had at this hotel. It was almost like a concerted effort of the family to force us to leave. Later I found out that they did the same routine with an Asian couple, computer problem, no rooms, so that they had to be put up in the dungeon for the night.

Pat ,, PLEASE post this hotel review on tripadvisor.com Italy hotel reviews.. people NEED to hear this. Also have you contacted your credit card company,, you should immediately and explain the situation.. you should have done it the moment you got home!

Some hotels do pick and choose who they treat well. The heat issue however , well that is unfortunately not unusaul in many places in Europe.. but they could have at least sent up an area heater in the situation you were in..

Last tip.. never pay for a room till you see it!

Seriously,, please post on tripadvisor.com

You may already know this Pat, but in case you don't, how many stars a hotel has in Europe has nothing to do with the quality of the hotel like it does in the US. It only means how many amenities they have, such as an elevator, a phone, a tv, a hair dryer, etc. So don't use stars as an indicator of quality.

I've stayed in some good RS recommended hotels and some bad ones that were awful so I've learned not to rely solely his recs.
