After a perfect Swiss day capped with American football,...
Day 2: Dad and I got up early for the Golden Pass train to the Bernese Oberland. Dad and I both had wanted to take one of the Swiss rail journeys we've read about . Had considered the Glacier Express but decide to stay in BO and divide up the Golden Pass . Few anxious moments on the platform in Lucerne in front of the GP train -all 3 cars and about 30 waiting people all counting heads and jostling for position. Finally a Swiss rail conductor told us that additional cars were coming. then we all waited for a while until a young woman marched to the head of the line and pushed the green butt0n that opened the doors to the car. LOL. Sent Dad ahead to grab 2 window seats while I took care of the luggage. Dad did a great job grabbing 2 window seats on the right side of the train.
The train ride was as beautiful as reported elsewhere . Simply stunning- so enjoyed the view and checking out places for future visits.
It was during this ride that we had one of those travel moments with other travellers that says people are people everywhere. Dad had settled in nicely to his window seat( Dad is about 5'11 , broad shoulders) when a group of 6 Asian tourist came on the train. 2of the young, petite woman and 2 of the men sat in the 4 seats across from us, the third petite woman sat next to me and the sixth young man sat next to Dad. You guessed it- this guy had the build of a young sumo wrestler. Dad gave me the glance that said he had to sit here. They both looked at each other and wiggled a little. Then I noticed that the sumu wrestlers friends were also giggling. A few words between them and the young woman got up, crossed the aisle and switched seats. We all burst out laughing and Dad and the wrestler exchanged fist bumps! The ride was as beautiful as reported.
Arrived in Interlaken and switched to the train to Lauterbrunnen. ( scooped up some apple pasties and snacks in the COOP while we waited.
I had read a lot of opinions about whether to stay in the Valley (Lauterrbrunnen) or continue up to Murren or Wengen. My two cents: It comes down to one question Are you mainly going to walk /hike (stay in Murren or Wengen) OR are you going to sightsee (stay in the valley). Our plan was to sightsee so we stayed in Lauterbrunnen. ( I also was a little concerned about the altitude and thought it would be better to stay lower).
We loved Lauterbunnen - the valley scenery is gorgeous - loved the waterfalls and the gentle (flat) walk next to the river. Watching the trains go up to Wengen esp at night was like having our own best ever Lionel train set! and Lauterbrunnen had some lovely restaurants and terraces for an afternoon beer/latte break on the walk back to Hotel Jungfau after our return.
Dad and I went to Wengen and then the cable car to M(?) where I hoped to do the 'easy walk' to Kleine Schideg descibed in RS book ( I had done this before and really wanted to do it as an intro for Dad) Unfortunatley, the mist did not clear so we contented ourselves with a bratwurst lunch and taking pictures with the wooden cow sculptures. Had a nice drink at the cafe next to the train station and admired the mountains . Agreed :perfect day 2
Diane,
Loving your trip report! Funny moment on the train with the Sumo wrestler, these little things make the lasting memories. I wish I could travel with my widowed Mom but she is 92 and while she does well in her home environs, using a cane and sometimes a walker, it would not be realistic to contemplate a European trip. It sounds like you and your Dad have an easy relationship, making you good travel companions. How nice!
A question: what is the altitude for Lauterbrunnen Valley vs Murren? I am thinking about another RS tour and some of his go to either Lauterbrunnen or Murren. I have difficulty adjusting to elevations above 5,000 or so.
Look forward to further installments of your trip report.
Thanks,
Judy B
Judy B,
Lauterbrunnen is at 795 metres (2,608 ft),
Wengen is 1,274 m (4,180 ft),
Mürren is 1,650 m (5,413 ft.),
Männlichen is 2,343 m (7,687 ft) (probably the "M" Diane was searching for)
Kleine Scheidegg is 2,061 m (6,762 ft) (the other end of that walk)
and the Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe)(by train) is at 3,454 m (11,332 ft) - the railway station is the highest in Europe, then it a couple of flights of stairs or elevator up from there.
Thanks Judy - I am very lucky to have my dad and we do travel well together - but drive my brother and son nuts!!! LOL
Nigel gave you the elevations. Dad did not do well at Jungfrau - lightheaded and dizzy. He was fine at Kline Schdig (sorry for the spelling) and great at Piz Gloria, Schilthorn , Murren and Wengen
Nigel,
Thanks for the altitude information. I will make note of them and make trip plans accordingly.
Judy B
Schilthorn is somewhat lower than Jungfraujoch at 2,970 m (9,740 ft).
