Parking in Cinque Terre

We have just returned from a week in Manarola. We drove into the area, but discovered that parking in or near the tiny villages is very difficult and expensive. The free parking spaces along the roads were all taken, and even the paid spaces were full when we arrived on a Saturday. Paid parking there costs 20 - 25 Euro/day. It may be possible to arrange for a parking space with the hotel or pension owners, but it will likely be expensive as well.

We left our car for the whole week in La Spezia in the Piazza d'Armi free parking lot. It was about a 10 minute walk from the La Spezia Centrale station. The train ride from La Spezia to any of the villages is short.

You know, that's what seasoned travelers tell people day after day after day...don't drive into Venice and don't drive into Cinque Terre. There's no need in it, it's difficult to find a place to park, it can be expensive to park, that rental car just sits day after day not being used and you still have to PAY for those unused days. It's just a waste.

jjinczech - did you happen to notice if luggage storage was still available at La Spezia Centrale? I'm finding articles from last year and prior but links are broken. Much appreciated!

Yes, the very limited parking in the Cinque Terre, in the summer and especially on weekends, has been discussed here many times.

Tim, your advice does not stack up for every situation. We put our car in the garage at Venice for three days on a trip where we had a lease car for 60 days. It would hardly have been sensible to return the car to France and then train to Venice and then train back to France and then pick up a new lease car.
