Paris, Munich, Prague, Rome, and Positano in 19 days - Part IV

July 7 - After Dachau we went to the Deutsch Museum. It's set up in sections and we saw the ships, the planes, the computers, the caves, etc. We missed the Mining section which turns out was what our son and daughter in law wanted us to see there. It's hard to read your notes and get everywhere and see everything you want to see. Especially when you're tired and your feet hurt. :)

We were staying within a block of the Marienplatz with the Glockenspiel Clock so we ate there at an outside cafe. We had pizza and beer and wine and then gelato somewhere nearby.

July 8 - We got up early, had breakfast at our hotel (included) and took four trains to Rothenburg. We only brought one small backpack and stayed the night there at the Eisenhut hotel next to the Christmas store. Rothenburg is a cute little medieval town. When we got there we had some authentic german food at a local restaurant and then checked into our hotel. Saw the famous yellow house and some of the gates. We walked some of the exterior wall and I shopped at the famous Christmas store which I loved. We did the Night Watchman tour at 8:00pm and it was very entertaining and interesting. He tells about the history of Rothenburg and how it survived getting destroyed in WWII along with lots of other stories. One of the original houses there is still lived in by descendants of the original owners! I thought it was interesting that you pay after and you just give the money to him or his wife.

July 9 - We had the best breakfast yet at our hotel and then we walked the outer wall of the town. A lot of it is covered and if you're over 6' tall you have to hunch over. My poor husband clobbered his head twice! People all over the world donate money to have parts of the wall restored and they get a little plaque with their name on it and where they were from embedded in the wall. It was interesting to read all the plaques. There are some great views of the town and the country outside the town from the top of this wall.

We checked out of our hotel and checked out the St. James church where there's Altarpiece of Holy Blood, carved in wood by the great Tilman Riemenschneider. Then we headed for the train station. There is a tiny place to eat next to the train station so we tried the Doner Kebabs there (our son had told us to try one). It was o.k....filled us up. Took the four train rides back to Munich where we ate again at the Hard Rock Cafe. It was just nice to have american food for a change of pace.

July 10 - Took a 5-3/4 hour train ride today Munich to Prague. We had a six seat compartment to ourselves for most of it so that was nice. Took a taxi to our Alchemist Hotel where they greeted us with wine, beer, or champagne. Settled in our room and went down for free cheese and wine tasting at 4pm! Walked to John Lennon wall and then had dinner at the John Lennon pub. Cute place but bad food. Came back for an early night because we have a lot to see tomorrow. Chocolates waiting for us on our bed. Yummy!

July 11 - Day in Prague! We walked to the Old Town Square (clock under refurbishment), Charles Bridge, Jewish Quarter, St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague Castle, Strahov Monastery, and six cool sculptures by the famous Czech architect David Cerny. Finding the sculptures was a lot of fun. Prague has a lot of beautiful architecture and history. The Jewish Memorial was very moving and especially so as my brother in law's family was from outside of Prague. His father and grandfather made it out but the rest of the family perished at Dachau and other camps. The Jewish cemetary was sooo interesting. They ran out of real estate so had to bury layers of bodies on top of each other. They would keep moving the tombstones up to the top so now there are tombstones packed next to each other sometimes representing 10 persons below! We walked this whole day seeing as much as we could.

Sally,
We toured the Jewish cemetery in Prague as well as the Jewish Synagogue in Prague, very moving! I took pictures of the gravestones going in all directions, this way and that, and noticed the stones carefully placed on many in remembrance.
In Berlin, there are brass plaques in the sidewalks outside the shops or apartment homes commemorating Jews who were deported, many with their birthdates and dates of death and what camp. Amazing! Did you see this in Munich?

Part V:
July 12: Had room service for dinner last night in Prague (it was great) and went to bed early. Tried to walk in the morning to the “upside down horse” sculpture but ended up at a horse statue in the middle of a street! You have to be careful with Google Maps. :) Got back in time to leave for the airport via taxi and fly to Rome. We arrived in Rome and shared a van with other travelers to get us to the Hassler Roma hotel on top of the Spanish steps. This hotel is very nice and a big splurge. They gave us a coupon for free champagne but we got wine with it the following evening. We freshened up in our room and went up to the rooftop bar and had a drink and ate up there. There is no service up there but if you use the phone you can call and get everything brought to you. Afterwards we walked to the Giolitti gelato store. We were looking for the gelato we had 10 years ago. This may have been it but their other store. They put whipped cream on top of it if you ask! Wonderful! We walked around and got our bearings since we hadn't been to Rome in a long, long time.

July 13: Today we went to Vatican City and joined a tour group for a Sistine Chapel and St. Peter Basilica skip the line tour. We had some time to kill beforehand and had breakfast at a tourist trap across from the Sistine Chapel entrance. Big mistake and I knew it was happening. Should have left and went somewhere else but i wanted to sit. My husband was angry for a few hours! The tour was 3 hours but it was very informative and went pretty fast and so, so interesting. This was the reason I added Rome to our itinerary this trip because my daughter had a baby last time and we had to cut our trip short. After the tour we took a train back and walked to Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain. Then back to hotel for well deserved nap! Oh, had lunch with a family that was doing a Disney Cruise. They were from San Diego! We’ve met a lot of nice people from around the world on this trip! Can't remember where we ate dinner but we got coffee gelato afterward near the spanish steps and sat on the Spanish Steps and people watched and then went back to hotel and chocolates on our bed!

July 14:
Today we took train to Naples where we had a driver waiting to take us to Pompeii. He waited while we explored Pompeii for two hours. It was very interesting and I used the Rick Steve’s guide on my iPhone with some earbuds. But it was hot! The driver then recommended a few places for lunch and we picked the one with local cheese wines, cheeses, and tomatoes. It was called Casa Setaro and was all to die for and up in the hills of Pompeii. The driver than took us to Positano on the Amalfi Coast. He had to take us to a garage because cars aren't allowed down below. Then we could wheel our luggage down the road and some stairs or pay 12 euros for the hotel baggage guys to take them. We paid the 12 euros and then headed to our hotel. Of course I misunderstood the directions and headed the wrong way. Eventually I put it in my google maps and we made it to our hotel Covo dei Saraceni right on the water. Our luggage beat us. :) We went to our room for a few minutes and then went directly to the pool where we swam and I ordered a drink! We ate at Chez Black which was a few steps away from our hotel. Can't remember where we went for dinner (probably had pizza) and we had gelato at our hotel and walked around and went to bed early.

July 15:
Today was a relax day! We sat at the pool and ate nearby at Chez Black and then dinner at the Brassiere at our hotel. Both were great. There was a path along the water around the corner so we took a walk on that to another beach to check it out. Beautiful walk and saw a restaurant that we ended up going to the next night.
