Ortigia, Sicily- Hotel Gutkowski

We recently stayed in this RS recommended hotel, and offer our review. While we have sevl positive notes, we want to alert visitors, DO NOT stay in the annex, a bldg about 3 doors down the street, which is part of the hotel. Our room was in the annex- it was one floor up (in US we’d call it 2nd floor). The room itself is OK, but the street entry to the bldg requires your key to enter thru a heavy door. And this door slams, loudly, throughout the evening hours. A few nites when we went to bed at 930-10, we were startled repeatedly by v loud Banging of the door, into the night. Even during day hours, this bang is annoying. And, being in the annex, you exit the bldg and walk 3 doors down to daily breakfast- not a big deal but if you want to head out after breakfast, you cannot merely run up 1 or 2 flights to your room to gather your stuff- NO, you have to walk 3 doors down and uunlock the big door with a separate key, and go up to your room, to get your stuff. Inconvenient...
AND if you stay in main hotel, they offer an open door patio/sitting area with ocean views for relaxing or sharing a wine- not offered in the annex. overall, the staff here was helpful and kind, the breakfast was tasty. Our one dinner at the hotel was just “average” not great. Overall, we liked the staff and the breakfast and room would have been ok if it was in the Main Bldg. If you stay here, DO NOT accept a room in the annex!

thanks for this advise. I know this hotel and was considering it for a future stay but will request the Main Bldg!

We liked this hotel, nice sized room, wonderful breakfast.

We had a nice room, main building, decent size, and comfortable. Only caveat, while it looks like the hotel is on the water, there is a tall sea wall in front of it.
