Just finished a two week trip of the Orkney and Shetland Islands with my wife. We were looking for a destination to get away from life. It was a wonderful trip which really allowed us to feel like we were the only ones on vacation...not always something easy to accomplish. The planning was difficult in that general travel books of Scotland do not give you much in the way of planning to visit these two islands. Thankfully there is a wealth of information on Shetland and Orkney tourist pages which allowed me to feel good about how much to plan for each location. We decided to stay in each grouping of islands for 6 days rather than attempt to feel rushed by doing more in a shorter amount of time. Too many highlights to name! Truly a once in a lifetime trip. If others are looking for a place a bit off the beaten path but steeped in Viking and Prehistoric history (and they speak English), send me a message and I would be glad to give pointers. We navigated interisland ferries, Flybe, large ferries, millions of sheep and some great tourist activities. The wildlife was unforgettable and the Shetland Islands has a fish and chip shop voted #1 in all of the UK...Frankies Fish and Chips in Brae.
Loved shetland islands. We were there in 2010. My great great great grandfather came from shetland to the us. Inkster Michigan was named after him. I would love to go back

Thanks Kim. Lots of people with the last name of Inkster on the Shetland Islands! It was such a memorable trip. Ranks up there as one of the best that I have done in 40 years of travelling. I had planned on it being a once in a lifetime destination but I enjoyed it so much I believe I will need to go back some time in my future!
