I have heard that in various cities retired senior citizens offer free walking tour of their neighborhoods and show off the beaten path things about their city. I would like to do this in New York City but have not been able to locate any information. Has anyone else heard of this?
Check out Big Apple Greeter, I think this is what you're looking for.
We did NYC on our own - with a lot of prior reading - but I've seen positive reviews of Big Apple Greeter tours for years.
Have you googled "Free NYC walking tours"?
I used a Big Apple greeter two years ago, it was very nice.
These volunteers are vetted and not all of them are "senior citizens".
They arrive with a Big Apple Greeter pen on their shirt.
The greeter, Sam, met us at our hotel. Prior to meeting us, they ask you what your interests are or what you would like to see. We wanted to explore Brooklyn, so Sam took us to Brooklyn via subway. We walked around quite a bit.
It was quality time well spent in an area we would have found overwhelming by ourselves. It was also just me and my friend, no tag alongs. He gave us about 3 hours of his time.
For his time, we paid for his lunch and a small cash tip.
I highly recommend
