Oberammergau, Germany - Day 1

We are booked into Oberammergau for 3 nights. Today, Day 1, we had a wonderful "town day". We were tired from driving, so thoroughly enjoyed the day strolling through Oberammergau and exploring the various alleys and side streets. Oberammergau is a wonderful town with traditional painted homes and many, many woodcarving businesses. We spent some time in the Catholic Parish Church - St Peter and Paul. This amazing church was built in the 18th C and is one of the most beautiful village churches in Upper Bavaria. The inside is stunningly beautiful - many frescos on the ceiling and walls; the alter will take your breath away.

We had a nice lunch at Gasthof Zur Rose (gulasch soup) and liked them so much that we came back for dinner. Wonderful meals and great service. In the afternoon we decided to take advantage of the nice weather and took the gondola up to the Laberberg. Here you get a good view of the Oberammergau and Unterammergau valley, the horizon towards Munich, and south toward Garmish and the Zugspitz. We weren't disappointed. If you stay in Oberammergau, like many other places, you receive a tourist card that provides discounts to various sites. The Laberberg bahn is one of them.

We are staying at the Pension Dedlerhaus - I would highly recommend them. The owners speak english very well and are very pleasant. The pension is on the top floors of the building with the breakfast room and separate woodcarving tourist store on the ground floor (guests receive a 10% discount on purchases). Our room is very good value (75E/n), very clean and spacious, has free wifi, shower/toilet/hair dryer, free parking, one of the best breakfast buffets we've ever seen (fresh fruit - lots, boiled eggs, cheeses, meats, tea/coffee, juice, muslei, etc, etc.) You also have the added benefit of listening to the bells of the Catholic church, which is across the road - if this bothers you, wear earplugs at night (:>) ) !!! I do, and it's not a problem.

Tomorrow we are off to the Kloster Ettal and the Linderhof Palace. Stay tuned for the next report !
