Nafplio/Epidavros Hotel Marianna – absolutely wonderful! You must be able to handle some fairly steep stairs, but there is nothing to compare to having breakfast on a shady terrace overlooking beautiful Nafplio, with the tower of an ancient fortress right behind you. The Zotos brothers could not be kinder. The castle near Hotel Marianna is definitely worth walking to, as is the gorgeous beach with warm water down the hill (opposite direction from town). You get wonderful views from the fortress on your walk down. Ancient Theater at Epidavros. Absolutely fascinating and worth the trip. Don't let your GPS accidentally take you to the ancient little theater (almost got our vehicle, which was big by Greek standards because we had 5 people and luggage, stuck on some of the super narrow streets on our way). We returned by bus in the evening to watch a performance of Oedipus. We should have realized that it would be all in Greek, with no subtitles (it is outside, after all). Acoustics were amazing and it was a worthwhile experience to sit among a huge crowd of mostly Greeks watching this historic play. However, the production was very contemporary and spare (lots of dialog, less physical acting), so it was difficult to understand what was happening. The most exciting parts were when someone would suddenly yell "snake!" in the audience and a bunch of people would stand up while ushers rushed over with their flashlights. At one point, they had to raise the house lights and stop the show while they looked for something that was crawling over women's sandaled feet. (-: If you see someone selling oranges by the side of the road near Nafplio – buy them. They are wonderful and more fragrant that in the US. There are orange groves everywhere.
