My Way Italy Sept 9-21

My first trip with RST. Expectations were high. Considered myself well prepared; extensive research, notes, documentation etc. Life chuckled.

I attended the tour for one purpose: create memories that I can and will cherish forever. Mission Accomplished at our first locale…. and so much more.

Learned listening to kitchen staff (below my hotel room) sing along with a Three Tenors concert for two successive nights shouldn’t create a personal storm cloud. Opened the windows to hear better. Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma brought tears.

Learned unpleasant Venetian weather shouldn’t stop my parade. Took the #2 vaporetto from S. Marco-S. Zaccaria up the Grand Canal…in the rain. Not many passengers onboard; stood outside to feel the water on my face. Found serenity where once there were dark clouds.

Learned trust is a necessary element of discovery. Have caffeine intolerance. Dared ordering a caffe Nero decaffeinato in a small espresso bar. Sat quietly at a corner table. Enjoyed due caffè and apple tarts. And no buzz. Found my sea legs and a renewed spirit of exploration.

Wandered the alleys near Piazza San Marco. Spitting precipitation. No map. Only one anchor point, San Marco piazza. Discovered a couple small “pocket piazzas”. A trattoria, 2-3 tables, a few chairs. Locals only. Found “la dolce vita” alive and well.

And for the rest of the trip, the pattern repeated itself. Surprise. Impediment. Patience. Discovery. La Dolce Vita. Hoping to return soon. After I unpack new memories of shared moments, raucous laughter and, of course, delicious meals and wine. And, so much more.

Bravo!

Love it! Reminded me that at the top of my packing list should be "open attitude".

Wow, TNRuss, this was a great tr. You have a terrific writing style. Please come back and post more on the forum. I’m so glad your Myway tour went so well. Nessum Dorma always brings me to tears too. Hearing it the way you did would be amazing.

Great trip report: “pack your patience,” “pack your curiosity,” “pack your flexibility.”
Thank you for the reminders!

Loved the report. Reminded me of my first time in Venice at a bar they told me the cure for jet lag was a cafe correto. That's a double espresso with grappa and some sugar. WOW, I was suddenly awake and ready to go!

Thank you for sharing your perspective during your trip! I loved your descriptions & especially that you understand how Venice is so special! It sounds like you caught the “Italian flu” which there is no cure. The symptoms are a desire to return to Italy over & over for more! : )

Beautiful thoughts. So happy for you! I struggle sometimes to see the glass half full, but I'll keep trying : )

About a week ago I very happily danced to the song Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield at my daughter's wedding. I think you were living these lyrics:

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

I’ve accompanied several friends and family on their first trips to Europe. I tell them the most important thing to pack is your adventurous spirit. If you expect everything to be as it is at home, you might as well stay home where you won’t be disappointed.
