Just recently returned from Montpellier, which was a unexpected itinerary alternative to Aix Provence it was a wonderful walking city with a beautiful old town, lovely squares, good food and a vibrant night and student life. I am in my 70s but had no problem negotiating the walking in the old city or the streets of the newer Antigone neighborhood. Although there are no major sites like an Eiffel Tower, I am surprised this beautiful fourth largest city in France did not appear in Rick Steves France book. I would recommend it as a two day visit. We spent 4 nights in Montpellier a few years ago and quite enjoyed it. The city very interesting and we took a walking tour through the TI in addition to exploring on our own. One day we took a day trip to Séte where they were having a wooden boat festival. Another day we went by rental car to Uzés, Pont du Gard and Nimes. I would happily go back.
Montpellier is the seventh largest city in France. If you count metro areas, it doesn't break the top 10.
I stand corrected. Seventh largest city it is! My book was obviously incorrect and thanks for picking up the error. Nevertheless, there are countless smaller less interesting cities and towns described in the Rick Steves books. I love his books and his practical, personal advice but I feel it would benefit travelers to be more aware of this city. The only risk is once mentioned in a Rick Steves guide book it could lose its hidden gem quality.
Rick can’t mention every place in his guidebooks and he typically prioritizes places his tours go to. I think there is plenty of information out there about Montpellier without him. I feel sorry for small towns that have been overtaken by tourists who read about them in a guidebook.
Indeed it is not only the 7th largest city, but it has also been the fastest growing city in France for the last 25 years. Also there is the city itself, but it is also considered a metropolitan area with fifty associated villages, towns and smaller cities incorporated into Montpellier Metropole. The recently re-elected Socialist mayor of Montpellier was also elected head of the Metropole.
