Modifying Guidebooks for Ease of Use

I like to lay my guidebooks on the table to share with my travel companion. I hate that the books do not lay flat. I also hate carrying several books when I will not need a good portion of the book. I have the spine of the book removed, then holes punched and then use a plastic ringed holder for the pages. I usually buy at least 2 guidebooks and this way I can combine them. I can also easily remove the pages and toss them when I have traveled to my next location and no longer need some of the pages.

I do much the same, but I have the final product spiral bound. The charge is usually $2 - $3. I, too, combine books and remove pages as I go. Much easier to use and it saves weight and space.

I plan to use 6-7 RS's Guidebooks on my Kindle 4 Basic while on travel (and had read them several times in the last months). It weights only 170 grams and yes, the maps are not well seen to safely navigate with them, but it does the job to provide a good look for a general orientation. If you want to navigate I believe you should buy a good map anyway or use a good mobile app. So, it is a very cheap and convenient way to travel with it. I love my Kindle. (I am not an Amazon employee, just a happy customer xD )

I love kindles - I had the first generation and have given them as gifts to my family but for some reason I like guidebooks in paper format. I don't have a Fire so maybe maps would look better on that device.

This is good advice. However, I like to keep my guidebooks and don't toss them. I went to Office Depot and paid about $15. I had sections of a thick guide book pruned to just the sections I needed. Then, I had each town/region collated and covered with cheap vinyl and spiral bound. I will do this again. Wifi at hotels helps (tripadvisor, etc.). I bought a Street Wise Map of a major city that was quite nice and helpful also.
