Mama Etna is angry and I get a longer trip.

The closure of Catania airport due to ash from Mt Etna is being extended every twelve hours or so, and I was too optimistic about flights resuming, so instead of arriving home this afternoon I am now scheduled for late Thursday.

I was booked for CTA FCO SFO leaving last night but the solution is now REG FCO LAX SFO leaving early Thursday morning.
Now I have to get from Catania to Reggio Calabria tomorrow and get lodging.

On the plus side, I will have Wednesday as a sightseeing day, and yesterday I had the best mixed seafood frittura that I have ever had in the tiny seaside spot named for Sta Thecla just beside Aci Reale.

Downside: I’m out of clothes and meds, so look like a wreck.

Yes, if I had acted sooner I could have flown out of Palermo or even Rome; please don’t critique me while I am in mid snafu.

Airline pays for the ticket change but I have to pay lodging and transfer myself, so far as I know.

If you know great digs or eats near REG reply asap before I click on something.

Congrats on rolling along with MOTHER NATURE! Just for giggles... The last time Iceland's most active volcano went off it shut down most Trans-Atlantic flights. Congress wanted a briefing on the subject - but the US Government expert on volcanoes with the Geological Survey was in Italy and couldn't get home. He did the Congressional briefing in the clothes he had... electronically.

Enjoy your extra time!

Will insurance cover your hotel/transfer for volcanic activity?

Good luck! I hope someone comes along with a few sleep & eat suggestions.

Good that you have the flexibility and wherewithal to enjoy the extended trip. We took a car ferry over to Reggio Calabria, then immediately continued farther north into Calabria, so I’m sorry I don’t have any recommendations for the area.

I’m glad you’re safe and won’t be making an ash of yourself :-)

You are maintaining a positive attitude. Good for you!
Since you will have some extra time, consider a visit to a laundromat. Clean clothes can really brighten a day.

This happened to us when we were on the RS tour. The Catania airport was day-to-day, depending on which way the wind was blowing. The airline booked flights for us out of Palermo (Punta Raisa) and we drove there. In hindsight, we could have booked a night somewhere between Catania and Palermo (like Cefalu) and made a circle. But you already have a plan. It would be a shame if CTA opened up in the meantime. But flexibility makes for good travelers.

I’m on the SAIS bus right now to Messina.

Free WiFi and nice seats; note to self for the future.

Glad I boarded in town because it stopped at CTA and a scrum of angry travelers attacked the bus whether they were going to Messina or not.

Italian couple next to me is starting their trip the same way I am ending mine—diverted from Catania to Reggio; no seats available out of Palermo.

With my extra time I will go to the duomo and the museum. Any other suggestions?

My mood has done a 180 today—

I like this airport B & B, room has a great view of, you guessed it, Mt Etna, and both strong AC and windows that open.

Deciding to make lemonade (limoncello) instead of trying to wait it out in Catania or harangue the agents at the airlines has me whistling a happy tune. Just don’t inhale beside my grotty wardrobe.

Check out the astronomical clock/bell tower on the cathedral of Messina! It moves at twelve noon everyday.

Enjoy the limoncello, Avi! I hope the trip has been great. I look forward to hearing more.

Will be in Catania two weeks from today. Most of me wants it to go smoothly, but part of me is hoping Mama Etna puts on an exploding lava show.
