Hello All. I am back from my RS Barcelona and Madrid trip and i wanted to share my experience with emergency care in Madrid. I slipped and fell in the shower at the hotel. I notified the hotel staff, a tour mate and my guide. The ambulance/EMTs arrived quickly. It was determined that i needed stitches to my lower lip. The ambulance ride to the ER was quick. The EMT and registration desk got me checked in quickly with a translator to fill out forms. The ER doctor on call did not speak english well so another doctor stepped in. Since i slipped and hit my jaw he asked if any teeth were loose, did i hit my head, did i black out, if i had any pain in my jaw, etc. X-rays to my lower front jaw were taken to be safe. I went back to the room and the first ER doctor was typing on his phone, i'm like what is with this guy? He was using Apple Translate to tell me i needed two stitches and he was about to numb me. I said "okay" both of us with thumbs up. After he finished stitching me up i went back to waiting room waiting for the she second doctor who told me there were no fractures, nothing broken (thank God). Stitches needed to come out in one week and he sent me on my way with pain meds. The front desk assisted in getting me a taxi back to the hotel. I waited less than five minutes for driver to arrive. Now, the cost. There was no charge for the ambulance as it was covered under their universal healthcare. I was in and out of the ER under an hour which cost me only 400 euros (trip insurance will be covering it). In short, my experience with the care i received from the EMTs, the doctors, nurses, even the front desk in Madrid was fantastic. No one very thinks they will get hurt or injured while on vacation so note to self, always take out trip insurance. Travel safe.
Oh my! I am so very sorry you fell!
BUT very happy with your good ER experience! Hope this was toward the end of your trip as well.
Would you mind sharing which trip insurance you have? Is it a medical policy only, or is it part of a travel insurance plan that covers your entire trip?. Also curious if you have already been reimbursed. Thanks.
Ii purchased travel insurance with Allianz for about $300. I submitted my claim today so no reimbursement yet
If there was no cost for your medical expenses, what can the insurance reimburse? Did you have to miss some of the tour?
Happy to hear all is well. Reaffirms again to me the value of insurance because as you say nobody expects the Spanish Inquistion…or getting hurt. Allianz was excellent twice when we had the need to file a claim over a few years. Continue safe travels!
Hello All. To clarify, the 400 euros was for the ER visit which had to be paid up front and my reimbursement took about 10 days.
