I'm just back from an emergency trip to the USA from Killarney, Ireland to Dulles Airport, Washington, DC.
I flew Kerry - Dublin, Dublin - Heathrow, Heathrow - Dulles. I did this same trip last November, and that time my bag missed my connection in Heathrow (2 hours) and it took 5 days to get my suitcase (FedEx mis-delivered the bag).
Surely this can't happen again? Yes. It can.
I scheduled 5 hours in Heathrow just in case. At Dulles, the bag was not there. I checked in to "lost luggage" and they said they "had no record of the bag, so that means Aer Lingus never got it to them at Heathrow." They gave me a $46 VISA card (not offered in November!) and said "I'm sure it will show up!" and off I went - after hours and hours of time getting this logged in, reported, etc. since British Air has almost no employees at an airport when a flight isn't taking off.
Finally got my rental car, and had to rent a GPS as my personal gps was in my lost luggage!
The next day I logged on to my lost baggage personal page and "still searching" was on my page. Off I had to go to buy shorts/tshirts. Later that day, "still searching" - so off to buy nice clothes for dinner. Next day they said "still searching" and at this point I discovered via an Irish Times article that 85,000 suitcases went missing JUST at Heathrow JUST by British Airways in one month!!
Long story short - the bag was never found the entire time - 8 days - I was in the USA for my mom's funeral. I spent a ridiculous amount of time buying clothes because I just kept thinking "they surely would find it today??" What a nightmare. I didn't have the photos I wanted displayed at my mom's funeral; didn't have the presents I had brought to my friends and family; didn't have my camera charger; my usa cell phone, my favorite clothes.
When the bag finally arrived, everything inside the bag was damp!! Clearly it had sat, outside, somewhere, for a length of time.....
Never got an apology. Not even an upgrade on my trip back. I'm just hoping I get reimbursed for the bills I've sent them!
