Looking for tips Nice/Florence/Milano in a few weeks

Just used some award miles to join my wife in Nice in 3 weeks. We have a week and are thinking of renting a car, driving along the coast to Pisa, perhaps drop off the car there and get to Florence via train, then maybe end up in Milano or Turin. Might stop in Monaco for the first night, but other than that looking for recommendations or ideas. Any good small towns to stop/sleep on the way to Pisa? Any other thoughts? Thanks in advance ...

The car rental fee to drop in a different country can be a few hundred dollars. You avoid that fee if you pick up the car within Italy, such as at the border town of Ventimiglia. Trains run all along the coast, serving all the stops you've mentioned. See also How to Look Up Train Schedules. The Cinque Terre and other coastal stops are pretty quiet in November/December.

Miguel, you might get more responses by posting your question in the Italy and/or France sections.

Thanks Laura and Zoe, and yes, I did realize I should have posted this on a different forum.
