London, Bristol, Portsmouth, Brighton

Hey all planning a 10 day trip to England in early August. My tentative plan as of now is to fly in to London on a Friday am and stay for the weekend and then go by train to Bristol for a few nights then on to Portsmouth for a few nights and finally to Brighton for the next weekend and stay with some friends for the weekend. Fly out on the next Monday. A few questions.

I would like to visit Bath but think maybe just stop on the way to Bristol (might be a pain with luggage) or go straight to Bristol and then just take a short train ride to visit Bath for the day. I also really would like to get over to Cardiff maybe? I suppose that is a lot with my current trip plan. I could skip Portsmouth possibly? I am going solo can walk for miles and have a short attention span. I like to see the sites but mostly really want to hang out at common places and just soak in each spot. Will be hitting pubs most nights!

Any suggestions on my plan.

thx

Perish the thought!

Bristol - Portsmouth - Brighton makes sense logistically. Cardiff to Brighton by train requires changing in London and a journey of almost four hours.

For someone with a short attention span and who can walk for miles then a day spent starting at the Historic Dockyard and then working your way through Old Portsmouth and along Southsea esplanade should work out well. In August the beach and Southsea Common will be busy (if it's not raining) and plenty of pubs to occupy your time.

The reason for the stop in Portsmouth is yes because I was looking for a place to visit between Bristol and Brighton....like on the way via train. I am tying to figure out if logistically Fri/Sat/Sun nights in London then Monday/Tuesday nights in Bristol (day trips to Cardiff and Bath) then Wednesday/Thursday in Portsmouth then Fri/Sat/Sun nights in Brighton....Monday train to Heathrow home. Is a doable plan. Maybe I should go straight from London to Cardiff on Monday after London? then do Tuesday in Bristol? I live in California and I know for instance that it may seem easy to get from Central Coast to say SF Bay but it really isnt.

There is a frequent and fast train service from Bristol to Cardiff, so I see no need to subdivide your stay.

There are just loads of trains from Brighton to London.

There is also an hourly National Express bus from Brighton to Heathrow, taking about 2:15 if the trains were having problems, including overnight journeys, so you will not get stuck at Brighton.

But what time is your flight from Heathrow?
