Japan for a Week with Infant Granddaughter

Here is some context for my decision to make a journey to Japan. The trip was in my thoughts because of my daughter’s (D) and son-in-law’s (SIL) encouragement over the last five years. It wasn’t until they had a baby late in life, that I believed it might be a good opportunity to join them for a portion of their long trip back to Japan. My little granddaughter (GD) was born in March, so that made her a bit over 6 months when we started our trip and it was very different from any other for me, not just because it took place in the Far East and I had never been there, but because I was traveling as a family unit with an infant. The only other time I traveled with an infant was nearly 50 years ago when my oldest daughter was 11 months old and we flew from Honolulu to New York.

SIL is fluent in Japanese - he taught English in Japan during his last couple of college semesters. My daughter knows some of the language, but relies on her husband to translate. This trip was my daughter’s third one to Japan after meeting her husband. They are traveling in Japan for 1 1/2 months; my trip was 7 days on the ground.

Flying direct on All Nippon Airways (ANA) from SeaTac to Haneda was a breeze, even with an infant. D and SIL booked bulkhead seats where a drop down bassinet for baby was provided. My chosen aisle seat was 3 rows back for ease in offering help if needed.

We chose mostly business type hotels for their proximity to train stations and for all the amenities with fantastic buffet breakfasts. The Onsen hotel in Akiu was great for relaxing after two chaotic days in Tokyo. We all had JR (Japan Rail) passes for ease in accessing the trains we needed. We also traveled by local bus and taxi.

Fun and Unexpected Encounters:

Wonderful dinner date with SIL - restaurant had only 8 seats at the bar to have personal chef choice meal prepared in front of us and served on beautiful hand made pottery; chef asked me if there was anything I would not care to try and I said “Nothing that is still alive.” He chuckled when SIL translated and bowed to me

sweet locals everywhere adored GD, especially kitchen cook at Akiu Onsen hotel

“Conversation” with restaurant host while waiting in line outside the restaurant for the rest of my party, trying to explain they aren’t coming for a while; later that night I returned with all of us and the host recognized me and we had a good chuckle

Shocked at full row of seats on non-stop flight back home. It was so nice to get at least an hour or two of sleep.

Summary:

This trip to Japan was so different from any other since I was traveling with my baby granddaughter. It was fun having breakfast together and then down time during her vital morning nap. I filled in and helped out when I could by doing the usual tasks with a baby (bottle feeding, diaper changing, walks in the stroller, entertaining with toys and books). Her favorite toys were a piece of parchment paper and anything she could chew on to work on those gums. I imagine there will be tiny teeth popping through by the end of their trip in mid-November.

I loved just hanging out with the family but also, our time spent with SIL’s friend at his apple orchard was special. The food is great, transportation very efficient and the locals were very friendly. I’ll have fond memories of my time in Japan with the family.

Next up…… maybe Florida to visit my sister at Christmas, or…. Montreal-Quebec City

Tammy, Japan is a beautiful country and I imagine you will be seeing some Autumn colors pretty soon. My daughter says the leaves are just turning, but that is from Sapporo-way up North. Soon they will be going all the way South to Kagoshima

Lovely trip report. It is different traveling with a baby and the Japanese people love babies!
Japan is one of those countries you could make multiple trips to and never see the same thing twice. We were there last Spring, would love to go in the fall.
