Italy Trip Report #1 - Venice

As promised, here I go. I gained so much enjoyment from Trip Reports in my year of research (Journey Gal here!), that I feel I need to add mine if it will help anyone at all, or provide entertainment. I hope I won't put you to sleep. It's difficult to figure out how to write a trip report.

We arrived in Venice Saturday, September 12th late morning. Our plane ride was uneventful, but my legs were NOT swollen thanks to compression socks. I actually found them warm on the plane and not uncomfortable. I slept a few hours...

The adrenaline was flowing as we arrived! I couldn't believe we were actually in Venice! It was quite a change of pace to only have carry-on luggage and walk right past the baggage carousels. We knew we wanted a Water Taxi, and as researched, as soon as we exited the doors of the baggage area, they were literally right in front of us. We walked up, told them what we wanted and it was 110 Euros. They gave us our receipt, walkie-talkied over to the pier area (I guess) and showed us the door to walk to the piers. Again, I had pictures of what the walkway looked like from the internet, so wasn't surprised that it too us about 10 minutes. Arriving by water Taxi is exhilarating. To see Venice coming closer and closer, and then all the beautiful buildings just as you had imagined was magnificent..and then the best...starting to go down the last small canal and you can see the Grand Canal..then you pull into it...just WOW!

A funny side note. About 15 years ago when we were decorating our formal Living Room (the museum is what we call it)..we purchased 2 framed paintings of Venice. I have loved gazing and sighing at them whenever I wander in and out of our "Museum", usually to adjust the thermostat. Anyway, I was just in there last week and looked at the paintings, smiling on the inside that I finally got to see that beautiful city. I leaned forward and looked again at one of them again. I know this canal!!! I have been down that canal. I took a picture of it with my camera and raced back to my PC where my photos are. I looked through them and sure enough!, as we were coming down the last canal in the water taxi, you could see the Grand Canal at the end. Same buildings down the small canal, and the large building at the end. I checked the detail of the buildings and it was the same! How cool is that??

OK, back to Venice. We arrived at Locando Leon Bianco. It is on the Grand Canal, moderately priced B&B. Not a full service hotel. You can read all about it on TripAdvisors..the good and bad. I'd recommend if you are only there a couple nights, but that's it. Checked in, freshened up and were out and about at around 1:30. The Inn is located in the Rialto Bridge area. I did what everyone said to do and it is TRUE. Although it wasn't as busy as probably July/August are...it was busy enough. We literally walked away from the crowds. In about 60 seconds we were in a different Venice. Quiet, few people..then we came a cross where residents must live as there was laundry hanging our windows. The restaurants were filled with Italians. We wanted to stop and eat everywhere we saw, they were so quaint. We were in love with Venice in only 5 minutes. We also lucked out with the weather. Just 2 weeks prior, Italy was having a heatwave and I even went out an purchased more clothing. The weather the two days we were there was sunny and 75! Couldn't get any better. We stopped at some pizza place overlooking the lagoon and had pizza and prosecco, and were in heaven. All we did the rest of the day was walk around, take pictures...stop for gelato. We did venture over to St. Mark's square as I wanted to see what it looked like crowded...put I just wanted to see it. It was crowded..but again I imagine it could have been worse. About 9:30 I had had enough. I didn't have jetlag the entire day...and I worried so much about that. Maxed out words..will continue next post.

OK...I'll just continue here. Day 2 Venice: Up and out the door by 8:30.

The streets were so quiet...we just loved it. Walked and got lost, but eventually found out way to ST. Mark's square..as we had a Secret Doge's tour at 10:00. Along the way, we stopped at the darling cafes for cappuccino, expresso and pastries. We hit 3 of them, they were so cute and different...so different than the states. St. Mark's square at 9:00 was so eerily beautiful and serene. Hardly any tourists, just the few of us and the pigeons. I'm so glad we did that. Went to check out where to go for the Doge's tour, then were first in line up the bell tour. Went up there for 15 minutes, very cool, so glad we saw it from the perspective.

Secret Doge's Tour was good, I'm glad we went. I enjoyed hearing the stories and seeing the dungeons (and hearing those sad stories). I like history and enjoy guides. It lasted about 90 minutes and I was ready for it to be done. I do highly recommend it.

The rest of the day was spent wandering and shopping and eating! What I found funny is I researched all these places to eat, and ended up only eating at one! It is SO easy to get lost in Venice (but not scary as it's small and you do find your way), when you are hungry, your hungry...plus your tired of getting lost and don't really feel like finding your way to a restaurant. Any restaurant looks good at that point. The only one we decided to go to that I had researched was the one at The Bauer Hotel.

The food was good there, it was extremely expensive...but you aren't paying for the food...you are paying for the surroundings and the view. They were worth it. After dinner we wandered back over to St. Marks and decided to sit and listen to the dueling orchestras at the Florian.

This was one of my favorite nights. Don't be cheap..sit down..enjoy it. It is only 10 Euros a person and when can you pay that to listen to an orchestra for 2 hours? We ordered champagne and dessert. It was very expensive..so that was true. They brought chips, olive and strawberries like normal with drinks...oh...but the silver and flowers and career waiters made it so special...I'm not being sarcastic. The music brought tears to my eyes. The 2 hours cost us 117 Euros. Yes, you read the right. It was worth every Euro...so incredibly romantic, and it was a romantic evening.

I have to say that the vaporettos are nice, but they take SO long. We walked if we weren't tired and only took them when we were either extremely tired of just didn't want to get lost going somewhere because we were tired! They were nice to have.

We left the next morning at 9:00, and it was foggy and drizzly...good day to travel. I'm glad I brought that umbrella!!

I was very nervous about the fast train. Got to the station really early to make sure we knew what we were doing. It's SO EASY...don't fret. You walk in and right there is the overhead arrivals and destinations. You don't have to read Italian to know what it is saying..I speak and read no Italian and knew instantly which one was ours. We walked down to the platforms, very organized and waited until the destinations sign showed our platform number, then you just walk down that platform and the numbers to your carriage are located on different columns. The fast trains are awesome! We did first class, and dozed off and on the almost 4 hours trip to Rome. I highly recommend traveling this way.

Tips: The Murano glass jewelry seems fake to me close to the tourist spots. You could tell the difference in the quality and designs of the necklaces and rings the further you were out.

We didn't carry our passport in Venice...I know I know. We did in Rome, but just didn't feel the need in Venice, although we had a copy. DH always had a waist wallet and I always had my travelon purse with steel mesh and locked zipper. I wore it crossbody at all times.

Oh no, it's not too long! I love the story about having a picture of the picture in your living room. That is so neat and really, I'm thinking your Dad had a hand in that, lol.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post your adventure.

Thank you for writing your report! I am happy to hear the trains are easy to use.....we don't have much experience with trains, and that is the part of our trip that has me anxious. I need to get over it, eh?
Can't wait for the rest of your posts!

I love that you and your husband had a romantic evening in the café with champagne and music and all the beauty that surrounded you. I imagine that was really heart-filling for you both after all you had been through in the previous months.

Also love the story that you had already purchased for your home (the "museum") a painting that you ended up visiting in real life!

Off to read parts 2 and 3 . . .

Thank you everyone for all your kind comments about my trip, experiences and Dad in the 3 reports I did. I know they sort of ran on...might have been hard to read. I will do my final one tomorrow on our last day in Naples. It will be shorter and I know many won't agree with me.

Having just been in Venice in late Oct. this was a nice revisit! We did many of the same things, getting lost, enjoying coffee, cafes, pizza, getting lost some more. It was a huge surprise to us how much we loved Venice. Our little hotel had a great breakfast and a lovely patio and while the hotel itself was not fancy, the owners treated you as valued guests and were so very friendly. If we ever go to Europe again Venice will be on the list. Thank you!
