Italy trip from a teenager's point of view

This June our family went to RS Heart of Italy tour and had a blast. My teenager son wrote this trip review below to share.

The Rick Steves Heart of Italy tour was my first ever tour to Italy, and Europe in general. And it was a fantastic introduction to all Italy has to offer, the food, the people, the atmosphere was all so incredible. And the tour does an awesome job of making sure we get the full experience in enjoying them.

The tours around the museum were a great introduction to the artwork and architecture of Italy. Each street and building had a story of how it was made and what great impact, and it was great for us to have guides to explain the backstory of each great pieces. Our one in Florence, Paul was the best. He gave such great explanations of the history behind each painting and sculpture, but also asked us questions to us like he was a professor asking a class. It was startling at first for him to ask such deep questions and it felt a lot like a school class, but it quickly started to engage us and help us understand the thinking behind each art piece and teach us about the rich history behind them. The Rome guide was probably my least favorite one. She was not very engaging and so the information she was telling was lost to us sometimes because it was hard to pay attention to her. The guide in Volterra was more relaxed and did a better job of holding our attention throughout the tour and did not go on some huge rant. She gave great engaging stories of Volterra’s rich history from the past years. Overall, each tour was a good introduction to each city to learn about the rich history. (Cinque Terre had no tour guide by the way but there is plenty of great towns for you to explore on your own.)

The restaurants were authentic with a rich history, some that had been open for over five decades, with some of the best recipes. It really does not matter the tours takes you to eat, I guarantee the food you have here will be top quality. The ingredients are fresh and local, always of top quality, the bright and fresh tomatoes and vegetables, the delicious and tender grilled meats, and crisp bread was like Italy in two slices of bread. These ingredients just help elevate the dish whether it be a pasta, pizza, Florentine steak or just a simple cantaloupe for dessert (Which are insanely good!). Even the deep-fried food like calamari did not feel oily or heavy, but felt so light that you could just eat plates after plate of it. Overall, each meal had lots of time and effort which helps you appreciate all the love and care with each bite. I finished every single plate at any meal because it was so good that I was motivated to enjoy it all and not let any go to waste. As for allergies, the restaurants do a good job to make sure they won’t ruin your meal. In the restaurants we went to for group dinners, they helpfully provide alternate dishes for any dietary restrictions like allergies or if you are vegan/vegetarian. Others restaurants had numbers next to each dish that mean a different allergy, like 1 for ‘has dairy’, 2 for ‘has tree nuts’, etc. With the hospitality and energetic friendliness that each restaurant and service have, the dining experience here is really something special that you do not want to miss. So, I highly suggest going to any nearby restaurant to enjoy a fantastic plate of local Italian food.

And our tour guide was incredible and made the trip so enjoyable. She was super sweet, easy to approach, and was eager to share everything about Italian culture. Throughout the trip and group dinners, she was more than happy to share about her backstory like her great experience with Rick Steves, and all the incredible things about her home country. And she was also thrilled to listen to all our stories from our lives back home, travel stories, or just casual pop culture from where we live like the price for clothes in the U.S. compared to Italy or about Matthew Broderick from Ferris Bueller (Since a guy at an olive oil refinery factory we visited looked just like him). She was excited to soak up all our thoughts and passions as we were on Italian culture and atmosphere. Her recommendations about everything from the shops to the best places to eat were top notch and held true to her word. When we were in Florence, she gave great recommendations for a sandwich restaurant for lunch and a amazing leather store to buy jackets and bags from.

Once in Volterra at a wine tasting, I was bored and began to sketch on a scratch piece of paper. After the tasting, she noticed my drawing and kindly gave me praise. Two days later, I got a gorgeous leather-bound sketchbook from her that she bought for me with a small amount of money Rick Steves tour guides have and can choose what to do with it. It was an authentic Italian sketchbook with paper from Florence that I could use as a memento that I could use to write and draw my Italian adventures in. Caught off guard by the thought and care she put into this gift for me, I was very touched by this act of kindness. This is a perfect example of the fantastic tour guides that Rick Steves appoint, and how they are kind, informative, and helpful while also making sure to make a personal connection with their group members, making sure they have a fun and memorable trip.
And to be honest, I was skeptical about the trip at first. I was nervous about the cramped schedule, the hot and loud crowds, and how I would be an outsider to a group of entirely new people. But luckily this was not the case and Rick Steves blew away my expectations along with my fears.

First, they were very kind with the timing. Initially I was concerned that our time in Italy would be consumed by the tour’s activities, leaving no time to explore on my own family. Luckily, this was not the case. The schedule was very manageable and well-paced, you get a great balance of time with your group, but also make plans for yourself (So use this given free time and plan!). Each day we would spend around a max of three hours and half with the group (Mostly in the morning but sometime in the afternoon) and later set free to do any activities you want afterward (Or before if the activities are taking place in the afternoon). An example of a day would be in the morning, we would meet up at 8:30-ish, check out the local area or museum and the tour would end around lunch time. At this point, we are free to explore any restaurant or site that we wanted. It is very smart of Rick Steves to have a mix of group time to be introduced to the history and atmosphere of the place we are in, and it’s considerate of them to allow their group to enjoy free time themselves the way they want to.

Secondly, I was concerned of interacting with the group and that it would be difficult to fit in. I feared I would be the youngest by 20+ years and could not find anything to talk to them about. But fortunately, this group was a fantastic one. It was mash up of people in different points of their lives and from all around the world which incited some fun conversations and moments. Each person was just this incredible collection of stories and jokes that made each meal or interaction was fun. All the people were fun and easy to approach to just share a small conversation for a moment or forge whole new friendships.

Overall, the tour was a perfect way to kick off my summer break. It was great to explore all different sides of Italy, from Rome to Volterra, to Cinque Terre, and then to Florence. It is a truly once in a lifetime experience where you get to meet great new people and explore Italy’s streets, shops, restaurants, and amazing culture. And afterwards, you get a bunch of amazing souvenirs but most importantly memories.

Heads Up/Tips

  • Make sure to put on lots of sunscreen and drink tons of water (bring a water bottle and refill whenever you can!). The Italian heat is brutal so be prepared!
  • Try to go to Italy before your trips starts for an extra day or two! By doing this, you can explore Italy by yourselves and look at all the landmarks that will not be covered in the tour. And you can familiarize with the Italian atmosphere (nightlife, heat, traffic, etc.). It is also an opportunity to allow yourself to adjust to the jetlag and time zone so you will not be too tired on the very first day of the tour
  • Stay up late. The nightlife in Italy is a great and try not to miss it even if you are tired. The jet lags definitely going to be hard so try to take naps during the day to rest yourself and adjust to the time zone.
  • Bug spray or some way to prevent mosquito bites would be wise. If you do not have that or forget, have some sort of ointment to treat them afterwards.
  • Research would be best. Maybe not the things that you are going to do with the tour group, but stuff you want to do in your own free time when the tour guides not there. Like local restaurants, sites, stores to explore. Or just an overall map of where is what so you do not get lost or of helpful places like water fountains and ATMS. And concepts in Italian life, such as how the dishes at a meal are structured, the chaotic train system, and other parts of their culture.
  • Do not be afraid to try new and/or exciting things, like trying a new drink or food, walk farther than you’ve ever have in your life, or check out a new place or maybe three! Italy is full of new possibilities so make sure to enjoy and explore them!

WOW, I'm so touched by your son's engagement & how helpful most of the tour guides were to him! IMAGINE how much he will retain & has learned from this experience. Excellent choice on behalf of the parents who set this up too!! I especially loved this comment & hope it gets passed on to RS tours -

Great trip report. I especially loved the description of the food. If this teen does not already have food writer in his list of potential careers, he should consider it!

Dave. Thanks. Before the trip we were worried that our son may feel bored. So we asked him to do a little research on the cities we will visit, check out the museums, restaurants, streets online, to find something he's interested in, so we can visit it together. Glad it worked out for all of us.

Stayuan, I just want to add, great job, Mom/Dad, with this terrific kid. And yes, you definitely need to sign him up for another tour. What a super positive attitude to take in his life’s journeys. And the gift journal made my heart melt.
