Italy mancanza d’altro

My husband and I were set to leave for Italy on June 2nd and begin Rick Steves’ Best of Italy in 17 days tour on June 5th with more travel after the tour ended. Unfortunately, the trip was canceled due to the coronavirus.

As an alternative, we have decided to tour Italy from our home and region in Nevada loosely following the tour itinerary. We began by watching a Rick Steves segment on Milan and Lake Como. Following that, We researched recipes and created a risotto. Then on June 5th we toured Lake Como by driving the entire distance around Lake Tahoe or as we renamed it, Lake Tahmo . We found quiet spots where we could walk and maintain social distancing. We took our own food and enjoyed a picnic breakfast and lunch overlooking the lake.

We have decided to continue in this manner for the length of the trip, trying to find alternatives in our area which might relate to the Italian experience. We are listening to Rick Steves audios’ and television programs as well as other programs we might find. We are researching the regional foods and finding recipes. We are hoping this better prepares us for when we are actually able to make a trip to Italy.

We have named the form, “Italy mancanza d’altro”, which,as I understand it means, “lack of any other”. I don’t speak Italian, so if anyone has a better phrase meaning “lack of alternative” let me know.

We wonder if anyone else is doing something similar. If so, what.? Or if anyone has any other ideas how we can make this enjoyable.

Sounds like a fantastic idea, role-playing Nevada for Italy haha. Lake Tahoe certainly rivals most of what one would find in Europe ;-)

2.5 hours away from Virginia City is the wine region of Amador County in the Sierra foothills. Drive over for a lunch and tasting in the vineyards at wineries such as this one. https://www.villatoscano.com/

Most of the wineries have reopened but you should call ahead to verify hours and tasting options, some now require reservations.

During each day of my cancelled May trip and RS tour to St Petersburg, Helsinki and Tallinn, I followed my itinerary with virtual visits to the cities or museums each day. I found virtual tours for most of the museums on their sites. On YouTube, I found virtual walks (of varying degrees of quality) in the cities and virtual visits in the churches, museums and palaces.

On this site, I found 360 panoramas, so you can "look around" ….Florence, for example:

One note of caution, I found lots of interesting things to add to my itineraries when I get the "do-over"!!

PJ here. Thanks everyone for your replies. Lake Amador and virtual museum hopping sound like great ideas. Last night Bud made a Tyrolean dish called polenta wrapped in spec and served peperonata. Spec being a cured meat like prosciutto and pepper nada being a tomato pepper onion medley. I made a pear-vanilla gratin with apricot jam for dessert.

Bud here. Today was to be our day hiking through the dolomites. Present temperature in the dolomites is 43° and rainy. In Virginia city it’s 45° with snow on the ground from a snow shower last night. Pretty close yet a hemisphere apart.

Wow - we were in Ortisei last year at this time and had mostly beautiful weather. I would have been so bummed out with snow!

Edited: I see it's rain in the Dolomites, snow in Virginia City. The Boise foothills had snow on their tops yesterday after two days of cold rain. And yes, I'm bummed out!
