Italy is a fun country to explore. Here's a few happy moments.
1). Siena - go to daily mass in the Duomo. Sit inside the Mary/baby Jesus/Duccio Chapel. Get an intimate view of two fabulous Bernini statues. Then after the very short Mass, the few Italians present are very proud and happy to show you the art work. They know about 10 words of English. But, you can tell that they really want to share this beautiful chapel with you. There's a wall image that looks like a painting. However, the Italians will escort you to the wall and point out that it's a mosaic. Outstanding!
2). Assisi - My young daughter and I had fun giving a few bread scraps to the pigeons in the main square. Not sure we were supposed to do this. The pigeons knocked the scraps around like a soccer ball. So, my daughter and I acted like sports announcers with the birds. The pigeons are quite polite, not noisy and aggressive like seagulls.
3). Went to Campo de Fiori to do laundry. Hardworking, friendly lady at laundromat does all the laundry herself. So, a flirty, charming Italian man steered us - with our permission - to a table under a tent on the square. Turns-out, Italians are playing in World-Cup at this time. The Campo was alive! What fun. And, all because of a quest for laundry, which was finished not long after dinner.
4). Sopra Di Minerva Church - outside is unimpressive, does not look much like a church. Inside is a treasure house of art and relics. The Michelangelo Christ sculpture looks like a mini David. Plus, the church added a strategically placed "cloth" on it for modesty.
Lovely report. Thanks for taking the time to pass along these glimpses of Italy.
