Is ETIAS Operational in 2025 for US Citizens to Visit the EU?

Hi All

My family and I are planning a trip to Italy in May. We are all US Citizens. My sister believes that starting in January 2025, we need to get an ETIAS document prior to leaving for Italy. But when I go to the ETIAS site, I do not see any application form and it appears that the system is still not operational and may not go into operation until 2026. Nevertheless, I just want to double check if I am correct with anyone with a US passport who has recently gone to the EU. Obviously the last thing I want is to get to Italy and be denied permission to enter because I do not have the ETIAS document. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your sister probably heard that the ETA started in January 2025 for entry into the United Kingdom. Maybe confused it with entry into the European Union.

Thanks everyone for your quick response. I am glad that my information was correct! Normally it is my sister who is right!

Yes, I know about the need for the ETIAS type document to enter the UK. I need to get one soon.

But don't forget EES, which is likely to be rolled out from October this year.

Just a note, your airline won't want to ship you back home either, so once the ETIAS system is up and running, I would be surprised if the airline doesn't check that before your departure from the US (assuming that's where you're coming from.)

EES has also be delayed multiple times, but that is something you do on ARRIVAL into Schengen zone the first time after the system is up and running, so no need to concern yourself with that either. Enjoy your trip!!
