My wife and I tried something new (for us) 2 years ago - we booked a self guided inn-to-inn walking tour to explore an area of southwest France. It was a bit of a splurge but it was fabulous. There are quite a few companies that offer these ... based on a friend's recommendation we chose Inntravel (Inntravel.co.uk) from the UK (we live in Canada).
We started in Puycelci and ended in Cordes-sur-ciel (near Albi). The villages were wonderful, the inns chosen beautiful and the paths a joy. We spent 2 nights in 3 villages and 1 night in a small hamlet. A breakfast was include each morning, on days that we were moving between villages picnic lunches were provided and for Puycelci (which has maybe 2 restaurants) dinner was included; in the hamlet the place we stayed provided dinner and in another village where we were about 1km outside taxi chits were included. For the days where we spent 2 nights in the same inn, we were given a couple of suggested day walks - one being to another wonderful little place called Bruniquel.
And of course our luggage was transported to the next inn for us so all we needed to carry was the picnic, wine and water.
Walking between towns was on the order of 15-20kms and almost exclusively followed a couple of GR trails ... an amazing country wide network of maintained pathways. Walking instructions were overly thorough - no chance of getting lost!
So the only extras were 4 dinners and 4 lunches.
There was something special about walking into a village rather than zipping in by train, bus or car.
We plan on doing more!
