If you have time in Barcelona, Girona is a must

You take a short train ride right from the centrally located metro. Book round trip but Spain always lets you be flexible. This is probably the most upscale area of Spain we have visited. The old town is lovely and on the walk in you pass the river and colorful homes and bridges. Beautiful Jewish quarter with wonderful modern museum. Lovely cathedral with great views. The Resturant on the right as you face the cathedral is very good and had a great fix priced menu on the day of our day trip. Across the street from this , the best store, with better than Barcelona prices for all sorts of ceramics and other made in Spain items.

We took the day trip to Figueres and Girona through the Barcelona Guide Bureau this past June and had a fantastic time. We could have spent the whole day in Girona. For Game of Thrones enthusiasts, the steps of the cathedral and the area behind the cathedral were used to film several scenes. For foodies, Girona has one of the world's best restaurants - El Cellar De Can Roca. Reserve well in advance. Just wandering around the old town is delightful! Be sure to walk to the top of the old town and check out the view.

In addition, the Museu d'Art is really good, there are two important churces (the cathedral and the Basilica of Sant Feliu), and for a different perspective on the city you can walk along the top of the medieval wall.

Yes, indeed: Girona is worth a full day with overnight stay, at the minimum. Several restaurants boast Michelin stars; the city centre is atmospheric and includes a picturesque if shallow river. The rolling countryside, with flourishing orchards and vineyards and farms, allows scenic driving. Head toward the beaches of Costa Brava about 90 minutes to the east.
