I chose Hotel Castex in the Marais neighborhood, recommended in the RS Paris pocket guide. I was very pleased with my room and the hotel overall. It's on a small one-way street, and the property is compact. It is air conditioned. The location is walkable to the Isle St Louis and Isle de la Cite, as well as the sights of the Marais as listed in the RS guide. It's a neighborhood where I as a senior woman traveling alone felt quite comfortable.
My room was small, but very well equipped and tastefully designed. Unlike most hotels these days that don't do housekeeping until your 3rd day, I found that my wet bath towel was replaced and my trash emptied after each night.
Among the amenities were a safe, a mini refrigerator, a good hair dryer, a coffee maker, and a complimentary small bottle of red wine. The a/c had its own thermostat. I never figured out how to make the TV work as each channel said "this channel is encrypted," but I didn't really need to watch TV anyway, LOL.
I neglected to read the RS note that RS readers get the buffet breakfast for free -- darn! -- so I paid 13 Euros for the one day that I had their breakfast. But it was worth it, no problem.
In the area I found a few bistro or cafe- type places to eat on Place des Vosges and Place de la Bastille. I can especially recommend Cafe Francais on Place de la Bastille. It has outdoor sidewalk tables, half-open interior tables, and tables all the way inside, all with a good view of the monument, traffic, roller-bladers, and other sights of Place de la Bastille. I had a Greek salad (doesn't contain anchovies, unlike the typical one you get at home) and it was absolutely garden fresh, served with a full baguette and butter as well as my own bottles of balsamic and olive oil.
There are also other types of restaurants within easy walking distance, such as Asian and Italian and vegetarian. I didn't try any of them, but if I had been staying longer I probably would have.
