Which is the better time (weather) to visit and do some day-hikes in the dolomites: mid-October or mid-May. besides wanting good weather, we also wish to avoid the most crowded times.
Mid-May will have very few, if any, lifts operating. Same applies in mid-October, and additionally, the possibility of snow exists. This past winter was a very light snow year in the Dolomites, so mid-May would have been fine, Next year, who knows?
Dolomite crowds and prices for lodging drop significantly at the end of August when school starts and Italian families must go home. I would choose mid-September for best hiking weather and low crowds. We were there in late September, staying in Santa. Rusting, and closed down our lodging---literally. We were the only guests and they closed the day we departed, on a Sunday. We went from there to Tiers Nd stayed three more nights in a hotel that stays open til mid-October. The hiking was nice but it drizzled the whole time.
