The jeep tour was incredible. The young driver was the owner. He had started the business after purchasing the jeep from a Safari park in England. After working in an office, he decided he wanted to share his island with visitors. There were six of us in the open jeep. Seats were slightly raised and a step ladder was provided. Our tour was for 3 hours but nobody minded that we went over the time slot. We had a great history lesson of the island, saw some incredible scenery, ate crab sandwich and chatted with a great group of people. The following day, we had booked a photography tour. Mark was also amazing. I am no great photographer but my Sony a6000 was perfect for traveling and taking good vacation pics. My friend used her I-phone 10 and he told us about some useful features on our cameras. We ended up being the only ones on this tour. Again picked up from St. Albert's pier. Mark was extremely patient and helpful. We went to some hidden picturesque bays to get some great scenic shots. Stopped at some German military outposts and had the best time. Again, well worth the money for this tour.
We checked the weather for the week and the best weather day we chose to go to Sark. Its a 50 minute ride out to the island. We booked our boat ride the night before. We picked the 10:00 am to 6:00 pm times to go and come back from the island. Once upon Sark, we took the tractor ride up the hill to the village. There are several bike company to rent from and cycling is they way to see the island. No traffic. We biked to Little Sark first - walking across the incredible scenic causeway. Stopped at an expensive restaurant to eat fresh lobster. Our splurge for the week! Herm Island is another option to explore. We could only go to one island so we chose Sark over Herm after talking to the locals.
Once more highlight of our vacation was the German Occupation museum and the Little Chapel. We did this on our "rain day" and we were lucky to have our "neighbors" take us in our their rental car. We also go to see the fabulous beaches on the west coast of the island and watched the sunset eating fish and chips.
Guernsey is the most friendly island ever. The locals are kind and generous. We walked up from a steep bay and asked for directions. When we reached the car park and the long hill up to the village, the lady who had given us directions was waiting for us with her car (Fiat 500 most popular car on the island). She just thought we looked like we needed a ride and she was going that way anyway. We jumped in the car and we were dropped off at our cottage. Just incredible sense of kindness were ever you are on the island. Very low crime rate helps make this an ideal location.
Guernsey is the perfect place to relax and escape the modern world. It would be great for families with small children and adults looking for a slow pace. Not so much for the teenagers unless they are really into hiking and biking. I absolutely loved this island. I will definitely return one day.
