That depends on you. We did 50-50. Basse Terre has the large mountain in the center with the main road going around the the outskirt of the island--there is no other place to put a road. There is only one road crossing east to west through the rain forest. It is wetter, rainier, and has the rain forest. You can go hiking in the rain forest or up the volcano--with a lot of preparation. The town where the BBC/French TV program Death in Paradise is filmed here, in Deshaies. Loved this side of the island

Terre Haute isn't "high" as the name indicates but is flatter but still hilly. It has beaches all around and a larger population, shops, tourists. It is drier. There are islands to take boats to from both sides. We loved both and would go back in a minute. By the way, you should post this on the French forum because Guadeloupe is a full-fledged department of France, as Hawaii is to the US! Bon voyage.
